Greenway trail benefit
LISBON -- A walk and bicycle ride event is set for 1 p.m. Sunday to benefit the Little Beaver Creek Greenway Trail.
Entry fees are $5, and $10 T-shirts will be available to purchase.
Proceeds will be used to maintain and improve the nearly 12-mile-long paved pathway, which stretches between Lisbon and Leetonia.
The starting point is at the trailhead along state Route 164, south of Maple Street in Lisbon.
Stargazing event
LISBON -- A view of the night sky through a telescope is being offered at an event set for dusk Saturday at Scenic Vista Park in Center Township.
The free program is being hosted by the Columbiana County Park District and the Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society.
Society members are bringing telescopes and will be on hand to guide participants in viewing the stars and planets.
Those attending the event are asked to dim their lights upon entering the park to avoid impeding the stargazers' view.
Scenic Vista is along Wayne Bridge Road, which intersects U.S 30 just west of Lisbon.
La Leche League meets
LEETONIA -- The Salem-Lisbon La Leche League will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lifeline Clinic, St. Patrick's Church, 167 Main St. The discussion topic will be the family and the breast-fed baby. All pregnant or nursing mothers and their babies are welcome to attend. For more information, call (330) 427-2155.
Canned-food collection
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Village Gallery is collecting canned goods to help the needy. The East Neshannock Avenue business will collect canned vegetables through Oct. 20 and then donate them to the City Rescue Mission in New Castle. Anyone bringing in canned goods will receive $1 off their framing order per canned good up to 25 percent. Others may make food donations without buying anything at the Village Gallery.
Fire at vacant house
YOUNGSTOWN -- The fire department has listed as suspicious a pre-dawn fire today at 41 E. Delason Ave., a vacant house on the South Side. The fire, which started in a lounge area, was reported at 3:38 a.m. Damage to the two-story wooden house was estimated at $15,000. County records show the value of the property as $11,900.
Flu shots to be offered
POLAND -- Flu shots will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Assisted Living, 335 McKinley Way West. The shots will be given by Senior Independence Home Health Care. Medicare will be billed for shots for people age 65 and older.
An $18 fee will be collected from people under 65, and they will receive receipts enabling them to seek reimbursement from their health insurance plans.
Woman's death probed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Sunday afternoon death of a 54-year-old woman at an East Ravenwood Avenue home has been listed as suspicious. Detectives, the crime lab and a coroner's investigator were sent to the home after a report of an overdose. Police found Sandra D. Walsh dead on a bed. Walsh had been drinking with friends the night before and was given a prescription sleeping pill, reports show.
Boy fires gun into air
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four shots fired into the air about 8 p.m. Sunday at Bennett Elementary School came from a .38-caliber handgun taken by a 13-year-old boy from under his mother's bed at their Cameron Street home, police said. The boy admitted to police that he took the gun and fired it to impress his friends. The boy was taken to the juvenile justice center.
School vandalized
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two buildings at Legacy School Academy for the Arts at Mount Calvary Church on Oakhill Avenue were broken into and vandalized Sunday, police said.
