Tennis teamblanks St. Francis
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State women's tennis team beat St. Francis (Pa.) 9-0 Saturday.
Annie Marino defeated Amy Croskey 3-6, 6-4 (10-3) in No. 1 singles action. Sarah Rothenberg, Whitney Thomas, Nadia Shah, Alyson Finamore and Andrea Dixon also won in singles action for the Penguins (2-2).
Marino and Shah beat Croskey and Jamie Delorie in No. 1 doubles action. Rothenberg/Thomas and Dixon/Finamore also won in doubles matches for YSU.
Volleyball team falls
MILWAUKEE -- The Youngstown State University volleyball team dropped two matches this weekend.
Friday, the Penguins fell in four games to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Scores were 29-31, 30-17, 30-19 and 30-19. Freshman Nickole Kennedy had 13 kills and Colleen Royer added 10.
Saturday, YSU lost to University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in three games, 30-20, 30-16, 30-19. Kennedy led the Penguins (8-11, 0-3 Horizon League) with 12 kills.

Peace Race set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bill Rodgers, who won the Boston Marathon in 1975 and 1978-1980 and the New York Marathon in 1976-1979, will headline this morning's 28th annual Peace Race over a 10-kilometer (6-mile) course through Mill Creek Park.
The 10-kilometer run will begin at 10:15 a.m. at West Indianola Avenue near Glenwood Avenue, proceed through Mill Creek Park and end downtown near the YMCA.
The 2-mile Fun Run/Walk will start at 9:30 a.m. downtown near the YMCA where it also will end. Cash prizes will be awarded in the open and masters divisions of the 10-kilometer race.
Runners may register for the Peace Race today until 9:15 a.m. at the YMCA. A post-race party sponsored by BW3 will be held on Federal Plaza.
Poland residentruns in marathon
DAYTON -- Kathy Ciavarella of Poland ran in the US Air Force Marathon.
Ciavarella, 49, began training five months ago and completed her first marathon in 5 hours, 17 minutes, 20 seconds.
Saunders is guestof Curbstoners
The Curbstone Coaches will meet Monday at 6 p.m. at the Lockwood House to hear guest speaker Pat Saunders of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Geneva runners ranked
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- For the second consecutive season, the Geneva College women's cross country team has entered the NAIA national poll.
Coming off an impressive showing at the Greater Louisville Classic, Geneva is ranked 24th in the national poll.
Last season Geneva reached as high as 21st.
Charity gameraises $600
AUSTINTOWN -- The Harley Riders softball team defeated the Austintown F.O.P. 31-17 in a benefit game at Cullianan Field.
There was $600 raised at the outing that was given to Joshua Walker, 5, of Austintown, who suffers from Metachromatic Leukodystrophy.
Marino honored
NILES -- For his distinguished service to the sport, Sal Marino of Niles, president of The Legends of Leather and boxing historian, recently received the American Association for the Improvement of Boxing award.
The silver cup, presented by AAIB president Stephen Acunto, will be given to Marino at the Legends of Leather hall of fame banquet at Aulizio's Banquet Center on Oct. 15.

Iverson chips bone in shooting hand
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson chipped a bone in his shooting hand, but is expected to return for the team's final preseason games.
Iverson, the league's leading scorer last season and its MVP in 2000-01, injured the middle finger on his right hand during practice Friday. He is expected to miss 2-to-4 weeks.
Team physician Dr. Jack McPhilemy said Iverson's injury was not serious, although it will restrict his use of the finger for a couple weeks.
"I hurt it earlier -- I think the first day. I hurt it and in like 5 minutes it went away," Iverson said. "I thought that would be the case yesterday, but it kept hurting a little longer."
Greg Buckner sprained the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee Friday, and is expected to miss 3-to-4 weeks.
Blue Jackets claim Hyvonen off waivers
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Blue Jackets claimed forward Hannes Hyvonen off waivers from the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Hyvonen had 24 goals and 18 assists in 67 games last season with the Cleveland Barons of the AHL.
Hyvonen, who did not score in six games with San Jose last season, was traded to Florida in July.

Torrey Pines lands 2008 U.S. Open
FAR HILLS, N.J. -- The 2008 U.S. Open was awarded to the South Course at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif., by the U.S. Golf Association on Saturday, pending approval of the San Diego City Council.
It would be the second public course to host the tournament.
The Black Course at the Bethpage State Park in New York, where this year's U.S. Open was played, is the only public layout to have been the site of the championship.
Torrey Pines, site of a PGA Tour event each year, was designed by William Bell Sr.
U.S. Open champions Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson have won tournaments at Torrey Pines.
The Open has been played in California nine times, most recently at Pebble Beach Golf Links in 2000. The Open was last played in southern California in 1948 at Riviera Country Club.
Police: Suspect had Jordan's number
CHICAGO -- A man arrested for identity theft had a bank account number for Michael Jordan and was looking for someone to pose as Jordan or his wife, police said Saturday.
Ishman Walker was arrested last month, before he was able to find an accomplice who resembled Michael or Juanita Jordan, said Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for Cook County Sheriff Michael Sheahan.
Walker was charged with felony theft and financial identity theft.
