Training tournament
IOWA CITY -- Mahoning Valley residents who are visually impaired were among veterans from 28 states who participated in September's 2002 Training, Exposure, Experience (TEE) Tournament for Blinded Veterans, sponsored by the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center. They included: Irvin Fine, 80, of Youngstown, an Army veteran; William Schweikert, 80, of Columbiana, a Coast Guard veteran; and Barbara Anzelmo, 59, of Girard, who served in the Army.
Open house planned
POLAND -- The Mahoning Valley Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 137's open house for new and prospective members is Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at American Legion Post 15, 35 Cortland St., Poland. Korea veterans from 1949 to the present are invited to join fellow veterans of & quot;The Forgotten War & quot; for an evening of fellowship and information. Any veteran who served in Korea for at least 90 days is eligible. Call Pete Pizzulo, chapter president, at (330) 530-4602 for information.
First for Ohio Guard
COLUMBUS -- Sergeant Major Edwin Berio is the first Puerto Rican promoted to that rank in the Ohio Army National Guard. His Oct. 1 promotion came during National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) and as the Army and Air National Guards celebrate the Year of Diversity.

Army 2nd Lt. Robert L. Holenchick Jr. has graduated from the 52-week Army Helicopter Flight School at Fort Rucker, Ala. Holenchick is a 1990 graduate of Salem High School and a 2000 graduate of Youngstown State University.
Hospital Corps graduate
Navy Hospitalman Apprentice Kristen L. Downing, daughter of Michelle L. and Kenneth Downing of Ellwood City, Pa., graduated from the 14-week Basic Hospital Corps School at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill. Downing joined the Navy in March 2002.
Army ROTC graduate
Adam B. Johnson graduated from Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) National Advanced Leadership Camp at Fort Lewis, Wash. Johnson is the son of Robert E. Johnson of Sharon, Pa., and his wife, Amanda, is the daughter of Joe May and Linda Garmany, both of East Dublin, Ga. Johnson received an associate degree in 2000 from George Washington University, Washington, D.C.
Squadron Officer School
Air Force Reserve Capt. Jennifer C. Hohman, assigned to the 482nd Communications Squadron at Homestead Air Reserve Base, Fla., graduated from Squadron Officer School at Maxwell AFB, Ala. She graduated in 1990 from Salem Senior High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1994 from Miami University of Ohio, Oxford.

Deployed to Spain
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Brian K. Miller, son of Paulette N. Gillette of East Liverpool, is on a six-month deployment to Rota, Spain, while assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Seven, home-based in Gulfport, Miss. Miller is a 1986 graduate of Beaver Local High School of Lisbon.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Matthew D. Engstrom, a 1997 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, Warren, is assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 81, home-based at Naval Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va. He is aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, home-ported in Norfolk, Va., part of the USS George Washington Carrier Battle Group and USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group, which will soon participate in Operation Enduring Freedom. Engstrom's squadron flies the F/A-18C Hornet, a twin-engine supersonic strike fighter.
Deployed to Kuwait
Army Capt. Kelly E. Lewis has deployed to Kuwait to support the dual missions of Operations Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom. Lewis is a member of a Patriot missile battery task force regularly assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery at Fort Bliss, Texas. Lewis is a task force/forward operations officer with eight years of military service. She is the daughter of Daniel G. and Elaine W. Lewis of Boardman. She is a 1988 graduate of Boardman High School and a 1994 graduate of Youngstown State University.

Aviation officer school
Navy Ensign William C. Fitch, son of A. Jean and Robert E. Fitch of East Liverpool, was commissioned after completing Aviation Officer Candidate School at Naval Aviation Schools Command, Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. Fitch is a 1998 graduate of East Liverpool High School and a 2002 graduate of Youngstown State University with a bachelor of science degree.

Played at U.S. Open
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Merchant Marine Academy Midshipman Jacob George, a graduate of Canfield High School, played in the 85-member Regimental Band at the opening ceremony of the U.S. Tennis Open, accompanying performances by Tony Bennett, Judd Hirsch and Queen Latifah.
