NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Programs about German culture and government are being presented at the New Castle Public Library this month. Programs will be at noon, and refreshments will follow. Gertrude Tizak will present a film on Austria Wednesday; Crista Garcia, president of the German American National Congress, will speak Oct. 16; and Dale Chapale will present a film on the reconstruction of a bell tower on Oct. 23. Display cases in the library will also feature work of German craftsmen.
Philanthropists honored
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Four Slippery Rock University supporters -- Stanley and Marilyn Kraus, both formerly of Lawrence County, and Dr. Constance Smith and Ramona Smith, both of Butler County -- have been named by the Fund for Advancement of the State System of Education Inc. to receive this year's Eberly medals.
The awards, the highest presented by Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education, will be given on Wednesday in Harrisburg. The Krauses were nominated for their longtime financial support of SRU. Their gifts include Kraus Hall, a campus residence hall, and real estate in Sharon and Armstrong County. Constance Smith, wife of SRU President G. Smith, and Ramona Smith, wife of Provost Robert Smith, are volunteers nominated for their part in creating the university's Learning in Retirement Program.
Rally for latchkey kids
SHARON, Pa. -- Pennsylvania's deputy secretary of elementary and secondary education will be a guest speaker at a "Lights On Afterschool!" rally Oct. 17 at Sharon High School. Dr. Thomas Carey will join state Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, in addressing parents, students, educators and community leaders at the rally for after school programs that keep kids safe and healthy. The local rally is part of a nationwide effort to draw attention to the importance of providing programs for latchkey children.
Cats for senior citizens
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lonely senior citizens and homeless cats can link up through a new program being offered by Promises for Pets, a nonprofit, no-kill humane association serving Lawrence County. "Purr"-fect Pals for Seniors will match older people with companion cats for free.
All cats will be spayed or neutered and current on veterinary care. New owners will be expected to feed and shelter the animals.
All cats must be kept indoors and not allowed to roam outside.
