Detection guidelines
About 500 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, and about the same number will die of breast cancer in 2002 in the tricounty area.
RISK FACTORS
Gender, age and family or personal history of breast cancer. Of women diagnosed with breast cancer, 79 percent are 50 and older and 95 percent of women are 40 and older.
SCREENING
The ACS recommends that women age 40 and older have annual mammograms and clinical breast examinations by a health-care professional. Women between ages 20 and 39 should have a clinical breast examination by a health-care professional every three years, and women 20 and older should perform breast self-examinations every month. Women with a family history of breast cancer should discuss their screening schedule with their health-care providers.
TREATMENT
Treatments vary widely depending on the type and stage of cancer, as well as the age and medical history of the patient, and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormone therapy.
