CROSS COUNTRY E. Palestine, United win league titles



Danny Simpson of Leetonia defended his crown as he took first place in 17 minutes, 18 seconds.
EAST PALESTINE -- The East Palestine High boys cross country team had five runners place in the top seven to capture the Tri-County League title Saturday at East Palestine City Park's 5000-meter course.
The Bulldogs won with 20 points. Lisbon was second with 68.

East Palestine's Chick Corey (17:50) placed second, and teammates Aaron Allison (18:48) was third, Brad Weaver (18:59) was fourth, Craig McGraw (19:46) was sixth and Brett Egresi (19:58) was seventh.
United's girls edged Leetonia for team laurels, 37-38.
Lindsay Brickner of Lisbon won the race in 21 minutes, 18 seconds. Jen Woolf of United (21:41) was second and Melissa DiPanfilo of Leetonia (22:37) finished third.
Sim Earich meet
BAZETTA -- The Girard High boys finished seventh at the Sim Earich meet with 139 points in Division II Saturday at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
Canton Central Catholic won team laurels with 22 points.
Matt Duzek of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary took first place in the 5000-meter run in 15 minutes, 46 seconds. Ed Thompson (17:29) of Brookfield placed 12th.
Junior Bob Caldwell of Girard finished 20th in 17 minutes, 43 seconds and teammate John Reidel (17:50) was 23rd.
The Champion High girls, with sisters Danielle Bafunno (21:04) and Michelle Bafunno (21:26) took third place in Div. II with 55 points.
Canton Central Catholic took the title with 30 points.
Raina Keppler of Southeast was first in the race in 19 minutes, 46 seconds helping the Pirates to a sixth-place finish.
Maplewood's boys dominated the Div. III competition having teams place first and second.
John Palmer sparked the A team to victory as he finished third in the run in 16 minutes, 48 seconds.
Paul Moser led the Rockets B team as he took second place in 16 minutes, 39 seconds.
Luke McCluggage (16:33) of Jackson-Milton won the race.
Badger's girls took first place in the Div. II run and Maplewood was second. Both schools scored 47 points, but the Braves' fifth-place runner had a better time than the Rockets' fifth-place runner.
Katie Hughes of Woodridge won the race in 19 minutes, 35 seconds. Samantha Bonar (20:38) of Badger was sixth.
No reports were turned in for the boys and girls Div. I competition.
