Open house set at new school

The new school is part of a $34.7 million district building improvement project.
STRUTHERS -- Pupils are down to business as usual at the new Struthers Elementary School.
But residents and others who aren't yet familiar with the halls can view the new classrooms for themselves Sunday during an open house at the school from 1 to 4 p.m.
The school, at Ninth and Elm streets, is on the former site of Lyon Plat Elementary School.
A ribbon-cutting is slated for 9 a.m. Monday. Cutting the ribbon will be Mabel Creed, 95, part of the Lyon/Creed family, who donated the property to the school district years ago, said Dr. Sandra J. DiBacco, superintendent.
The new building, costing about $11 million, is part of a $34.7 million districtwide project funded through the Ohio School Facilities Commission, with 86 percent of the money coming from the state and 14 percent from a bond issue that district voters approved in November 1999.
Ground was broken in June 2001 for the elementary school. Construction was finished for the start of this school year.
Other buildings
The building accommodates pupils from Manor Avenue, Sexton Street and Center Street elementary schools, which now house middle-school pupils as the middle school undergoes renovations and a 7,000-square-foot addition.
When the middle school opens next September, Manor Avenue Elementary will be mothballed for possible use later as a board office building, DiBacco said. The Sexton Street and Center Street schools will be demolished.
The district also is renovating its field house and building a new high school, which will open in January. The old high school will be torn down.
