MAC Conference stunners: Salem beats Poland; Niles turns back Howland



Unbeaten Canfield has sole possession of first place.
POLAND -- The Salem High football team won its first Metro Athletic Conference game since 1998 by pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the season.
The Quakers outscored Poland 22-15 in the fourth quarter for a 34-30 victory Friday.
Poland (5-2, 2-1) is the No. 10 team in this week's Associated Press poll of the state's Division III teams. The Bulldogs also are the No. 7 team in the Region 9 computer playoff ratings.
The Quakers (3-4, 1-2), who hadn't won a MAC game in their last 22 tries, produced the winning points when Garrett Sevek caught a 15-yard touchdown strike from Landen Heath.
Heath, who gained 88 yards on six rushes, connected on 13-of-28 passes for 177 yards.
Poland's Brandon Fuller caught 16- and 10-yard TD passes from Sean Clayton, who hit on 10-of-14 passes for 154 yards.
Brandon Hardin rushed for 133 yards on 22 carries and scored TDs on runs of 19 and 4 yards.
Niles 3, Howland 0 (2 OTs)
NILES -- Brandon Rappach hit a 32-yard field goal in the second overtime as Niles (1-6, 1-2) won its first game of the season.
The Tigers (5-2, 1-2) have lost two of their last three games. Howland is the No. 4 team in Div. II, Region 5 of this week's computer ratings.
Canfield 35, Struthers 7
CANFIELD -- After a close first half, the Cardinals poured on the points to keep their unbeaten streak alive.
Rated No. 2 in Div. II, Region 5, the Cardinals (7-0, 3-0) led 14-7 at intermission.
Canfield scored seven points in the third quarter then iced it with a 14-0 surge in the final period to take sole possession of first place in the MAC.
Cardinals tailback Tim Dewberry gained 114 yards on 13 carries. Bill DeCola rushed for 76 yard on 14 tries.
The Cardinals gained 281 yards on 48 rushes and quarterback Leo Sorice was 6-of-7 passing for 72 yards.
Defensive tackle Dave Byce had seven tackles for the Cardinals, including two sacks.
Struthers (3-4, 1-1) gained just 15 yards in the first half and ended up with 43 on 28 attempts.
John Mansky picked up 41 on 10 rushes. Quarterback Tim Zetts was 9 for 17 for 95 yards and one interception.
