Shapiro setsSkinner meeting
CLEVELAND -- Indians general manager Mark Shapiro will meet this weekend with Joel Skinner, Cleveland's interim manager since July 11, to discuss the past season and the club's future.
"It's time for us to sit down and talk about things," Shapiro said Friday.
Skinner is on a short list of candidates that Shapiro is considering as Cleveland's next full-time manager. Shapiro said he isn't viewing his meeting with Skinner as a job interview, but conceded that it could lead to Skinner becoming the Indians' next manager.
Skinner took over as Cleveland's manager the day after the All-Star break. He replaced Charlie Manuel, who was fired by Shapiro after he demanded to know if he was going to have a job beyond 2002.
Skinner, 41, led the Indians to a 35-41 record after taking over from Manuel.

Jim Albus and R.W. Eaks also had 68s at the Turtle Bay Resort's 7,044-yard oceanside Palmer Course.

NASCARwashed out
TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Jimmie Johnson will be in familiar company Sunday when he starts from the pole in the EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
Johnson, who earned a pole for the April race on the 2.66-mile oval with a lap of 186.532 mph, got this one sitting in his motorhome Friday as rain washed out qualifying.
The order of the 43-car field was determined by season points. That put Johnson, the first rookie to lead the Winston Cup standings, in front. It also left the six drivers in the closest championship chase in NASCAR history facing a tight knot at the head of the field.
Mark Martin, who trails Johnson by only 11 points, will be alongside the rookie on the front row, with Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon in the second row and teammates Rusty Wallace and Ryan Newman -- another rookie -- behind them.
