Human remains found at illegal dump

YOUNGSTOWN -- Search dogs found dismembered human remains in several trash bags at a remote illegal dump site on the East Side, police said.
The remains, found Friday in varying stages of decay, were not immediately identified as male or female, said Lt. Robin Lees. The remains, which police determined represent an adult, were found near Carson Street and Cantwell Avenue, an area of the city commonly referred to as the Sharon line, he said.
Lees said the remote spot is a known dumping area.
All indications point to homicide, Lees said. He said that there are no suspects yet but that detectives do have leads, he said.
A litter control detail found bones near the site Thursday. Those were determined to be animal remains, Lees said.
The amount of trash at the site would have made it difficult for police to do a thorough search, Lees said. As a prudent move, police converged on the scene today with search dogs.
The dogs came from CAESAR, Canine Aided Emergency Search And Rescue, based in Greenville, Pa, a volunteer group, Lees said. Their business card says Paws of Life, he said.
Sometimes, Lees said, a person disposing of a body will try to obscure it by mixing in animal remains.
The remains were sent to the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office.
