Perry Township man indicted in assault

Perry Township manindicted in assault
LISBON -- A 39-year-old Perry Township man has been secretly indicted by a Columbiana County grand jury in a Sept. 7 standoff with police.
Andrew Swetye, of 1201 Depot Road, is charged with two counts of first-degree felonious assault, which include an accusation that the crimes involved a firearm.
Authorities say Swetye fired two shots in police officers' direction when they arrived at his home to check on him after a family member expressed concern about Swetye's condition.
No one was injured in the gunfire. Swetye is in the county jail.
Grave decorations
EAST PALESTINE -- City finance director Connie Robinson reminds anyone who decorates graves at Glenview Cemetery that all flowers and other decorations must be removed by Oct. 15, or the items will be discarded. Fall and winter decorations may be placed on graves beginning Nov. 1.
For more information, call city hall at 426-4367, Extension 18 or 19.
Bag grass, leaves
LEETONIA -- Village Manager Gary Phillips asks that residents not put grass clippings or leaves on the village streets until further notice. Phillips said the village will put out a schedule of when it will send the sweeper to village streets to pick up leaves and grass that have been swept into the street.
Phillips said he has received many complaints about street flooding and erosion during heavy rains. Most of the flooding and erosion occur because storm drains and catch basins are clogged with leaves and grass clippings. He said anyone raking leaves now should bag them because street crews will not start picking up leaves until the end of October.
Playground equipment
LEETONIA -- Playground equipment at the former Washingtonville Elementary may have new life at the village baseball fields. Councilman Dan Valentine is working with Jim Santini to remove the playground equipment from the former school grounds. Santini purchased the former school from the Leetonia school district this summer.
Valentine said he has exchanged telephone voice mail messages only with Santini, but Leetonia Superintendent Tom Inchak said Santini does not want the equipment on the playground for security reasons.
Valentine said he would organize a work day with community service workers to remove equipment such as swings, slides and basketball hoops. He said he will repair and paint any equipment before installing it at the baseball fields on the south side of town.
