LISBON 2 wolves remain free

+The missing animals are timber wolves, but a sanctuary spokesman said they will not approach humans.
LISBON -- Volunteers at the Richard E. Flauto Wolf Sanctuary are still trying to return two wolves to a 13-acre fenced enclosure on the 80-acre site.
A man who answered the phone at the sanctuary, who would identify himself only as Steve, said vandals apparently cut a hole in the chain-link fence sometime Tuesday, allowing "several" wolves to leave the enclosure. He didn't know how many for sure.
All but two of the wolves returned through the opening, but an all-white female and a black male wolf have not returned, he said.
He said both missing animals are timber wolves rescued as pups from illegal fur farms. They are shy and will not approach humans.
The male may be out of the area because he was never bottle-fed as were many of the other wolves and wolf-dog hybrids at the sanctuary. He said the male has not had much human contact and wolves in the wild can travel up to 100 miles per day.
Females range from 90 to 100 pounds and males can weigh between 110 to 140 pounds, he said. The female is still on the sanctuary property and, though she has been seen several times, volunteers have not been able to catch her.
The sanctuary has about 25 wolves and wolf-dog hybrids on the property.
Volunteers purchased the sanctuary at a sheriff's sale in 2002. The property was slated to be sold after founder Richard E. Flauto died.
Volunteers have said the creatures have been sent to the sanctuary over the years by people who purchase them as pets and then decide they don't want them.
Anyone with information about the wolves may call the sanctuary at (330) 424-7964.
