CROSS COUNTRY Sim Earich among meets Saturday



The Tri-County League and Metro Athletic Conference also have meets.
BAZETTA -- Starting Saturday, high school cross country runners will participate in the 26th Sim Earich Memorial at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
The Tri-County League and Metro Athletic Conference meets are also scheduled for Saturday.
The runs are final tune-ups for the district competitions on Oct. 12.
Earich meet director Oscar Grant has 41 boys and girls teams entered in 11 races at the fairgrounds.
A junior high boys open run is set for 9 a.m. and will be followed by a junior high girls run at 9:20; junior high boys, 9:45; Div. III boys, 10:10; Div. III girls, 10:40; Div. II boys, 11:15; Div. II girls, 11:45; boys open, 12:20 p.m.; girls open, 12:50; Div. I girls, 1:40 and Div. I boys, 2:15.
A year ago
In the Div. I run a year ago, the Boardman boys placed fourth and Howland was seventh behind team winners Walsh Jesuit and Western Reserve Academy, which tied for first.
Brittany Durkin had the area's top finish, 22 minutes, 31 seconds, in the girls race as the Spartans placed third and Howland was fifth.
Twenty three boys teams competed in the Div. II run and Mooney placed fifth, the highest finish of the 10 area teams entered. Champion's girls were sixth among 22 schools.
Maplewood's boys return to defend the Div. III title, with Paul Moser, John Palmer, Craig Rupe, Luke Bottorff and Derek Armstrong expected to challenge for the crown again.
Seven of the 11 girls teams were from the area for the girls 5000 run last year, which was won by Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas. South Range finished second.
Canfield, Howland, Niles, Poland, Salem and Struthers will participate in the MAC meet at Salem Memorial Park.
A boys junior high run is set for 9:30 a.m., girls junior high at 10, boys junior high at 10:30 and girls junior high at 11.
Both the Canfield boys and girls are defending champs.
The Tri-County League meet is scheduled in East Palestine at 10 a.m.
East Palestine won the boys division and United the girls.
Leetonia's Danny Simpson (17:59) returns to defend the boys crown.
