MCDONALD Crews begin to work on walkway-bike path
The village will put a resource officer in the schools.
McDONALD -- Construction has begun on Marshall Road, where crews are installing a new walkway-bike path and replacing the waterline.
The project is expected to take four to five months, Mayor James Border told council Wednesday night.
Village administrator Robert O'Connell acknowledged construction will cause some inconvenience and asked residents to report any problems.
"There's always something that can be done to help the situation or make it a little less inconvenient," O'Connell said.
"If a resident sees a problem, please don't hesitate to call. We'll get it fixed."
Police Chief Lou Ronghi announced the village has been awarded a $125,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to provide for the placement of a resource officer in the schools for three years.
Ronghi said the officer, who started work at the school Monday, will teach a varied curriculum, including drug prevention and other safety issues.
"Ever since Columbine, a lot more schools are applying for these grants," Ronghi said, referring to the student massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999. "It's very competitive."
Council passed an ordinance requiring full-time village employees to pay $25 monthly toward the cost of their health insurance premiums.
