WARREN -- A 47-year-old Newton Falls man, who was convicted two months ago of several breaking and entering related charges, cried as he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Daniel L. Hiles of Milton Boulevard, wiped away tears Tuesday as he told Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court that he is sorry for his actions and is "tired of going to prison."
Hiles pleaded no contest in August to 14 counts of breaking and entering, one count of theft, five counts of possessing criminal tools, four counts of safecracking and one count of attempted safecracking.
Police said Hiles broke into several places in Vienna and other townships in Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
In Mahoning County, Hiles faces 23 counts of breaking and entering, and one count each of attempted safe cracking and safe cracking. He has a pretrial hearing there next month.
Burglarized buildings
Milton Township Police Chief William Moretz said Hiles is suspected of breaking into 18 buildings and stealing money in two Mahoning County townships and Craig Beach. Hiles also is suspected of damaging the inside of the buildings, Moretz said.
The buildings burglarized include Jackson-Milton School, St. Catherine Church, Trinity Church and Lake Milton Library.
Police in Trumbull and Mahoning counties think Hiles used a taxi service to travel from his home to various targets. The taxi would drop him off and he would walk to the building, police said.
Law enforcement officials in both counties said they do not think the taxi drivers knew what Hiles was up to.
According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Hiles was sentenced to prison in 1986 and served six years for breaking and entering, safecracking and burglary.
He did another six years starting in 1993 for breaking and entering, possession of criminal tools and safecracking.
