Maplewood, McDonald win cross country titles



The Rockets' boys and Blue Devil's girls easily won the Trumbull County crowns.

NILES -- Maplewood High senior Derek Armstrong placed first with a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds, and his teammate, junior Paul Moser, took second (16:57) as the Rockets edged McDonald 22-40 to win the team title Tuesday at the Trumbull County Championship at Stevens Park.
Joe Kunkel and Jason Corman finished 3-4 for McDonald. The two teams claimed nine of the top 10 spots.
McDonald senior Jenn Wenhold ran a time of 20:00 to win the girls individual title by 41 seconds, leading the Blue Devils to the team title.
Wenhold has won five county titles -- four in high school and one in middle school. McDonald has won nine straight county championships.
Hubbard junior Mary Sivolich placed second and Wenhold's twin sister, Jess, placed third.
Columbiana County
EAST PALESTINE -- East Liverpool senior Mark Montgomery ran a time of 17:19 to easily outdistance Leetonia's Danny Simpson (17:44) for the boys individual title at Tuesday's Columbiana County Championship at City Park.
Montgomery has won six county championships -- two in middle school and all four years of high school.
East Liverpool's Jake Kinsey placed third and East Palestine's Corey Chick and Aaron Allison finished 4-5 as the Bulldogs edged the Potters for the team title.
Wellsville's Lindsey Mackall won the girls individual title with a time of 21:59. Salem's Brandi Sauerwein placed second (22:16) and Lisbon's Lindsay Brickner took third.
Salem won the team title and United placed second.
