In Niles, Warren mandies in one-car accident
NILES -- A 23-year-old Warren man died as the result of a one-car crash Monday night.
Chad Keener of Deforest Road was killed when his car hit a utility pole about 10:39 p.m. on Fifth Street in Niles.
Police said the car flipped and Keener was thrown out. His body struck power lines before hitting the pavement.
A passenger, Joseph C. Brine Jr., no age listed, of Bellair Court, Niles, was treated at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
An investigation continues.
Probing fatal wreck
LORDSTOWN -- An accident that claimed a Newton Township woman is under investigation.
According to police, Melissa Harmon, 36, of Kings Drive, was killed when her car hit a pole on Palmyra Road, north of Salt Springs Road, at 3:28 a.m. Monday.
Harmon was pronounced dead at the scene.
Scrappers plan event
NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers will stage their fourth trick-or-treat event for those 14 and younger at Cafaro Field from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30.
Free tickets are available to the first 2,500 youths at the team offices at the stadium or at the Eastwood Mall customer service desk. Parents do not need a ticket.

Landscaping donationbenefits Warren JFK
WARREN -- Sam and Caryn Covelli and John and Nora Millik have donated landscaping to John F. Kennedy High School.
On a sculptured mound, boxwood shrubs have been planted to spell out & quot;JFK. & quot; Adding color to the sign are yellow mums. In the spring, a mix of tulips will bloom.
The Covellis and Milliks hired Creekside Gardens of Warren to do the project.
& quot;Everyone entering the building has been very complimentary of the landscaping. It has been a tremendous improvement to the look of our school," said principal June Drennen.
The gift includes regular maintenance service such as watering and pruning.

NILES -- The Niles Income Tax Division has mailed delinquency notices for this year. Anyone not responding will be cited. Anyone failing to pay can face up to a $500 fine and/or up to six months in jail.

Man arrested in robbery
SHARON, Pa. -- Police have arrested a Quinby Street man wanted in the Sept. 17 robbery of the Dairy Mart store on U.S. Route 62 in Brookfield Township.
George Crawford Jr. was picked up at his home around 1 a.m. Sunday on a Trumbull County warrant.
He was being held in Mercer County Jail pending extradition to Ohio.
Brookfield police said Crawford is accused of stealing three 18-packs of beer from the store and assaulting a clerk. He faces charges of robbery, assault and theft.
Shooting victim update
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dalvon Dumas, 22, of Midlothian Boulevard remained in critical condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center with gunshot wounds to her neck and chest.
Dumas, who was shot Sunday as she drove on the South Side, believes the shots were intended for her passenger, reports show.
Johnny Love and two of his passengers, Brandon Jones and Joey Mitchell, were arrested Sunday. No charges were filed Monday against Jones, 19, of Ellenwood and Ohio avenues, or Mitchell, 24, who has addresses in Columbus and Conneaut.
Traffic charges were filed Monday against Love, 28, of Hudson Avenue, and a charge related to the shooting was expected to be filed today, police said.
Robbery reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 67-year-old man passing out fliers on West Warren Avenue was knocked to the ground in his neighborhood about 9:30 p.m. Sunday and robbed of $10.55, reports show. He told police Monday he was jumped by five men.
