Crash kills woman, 36
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Vikki Macarella, 36, of East Washington Street, was killed in a two-car crash on Croton Avenue. Police said she was traveling east when she lost control of her vehicle, which crossed the center line about 10:30 p.m. Monday. Her vehicle collided with a car driven by Beverly Jones, 34, of Portersville. Jones appeared to have cuts and bruises on her arm and head and was taken to Jameson Hospital, police said. Her condition was not available this morning. Police said Macarella appeared to have died on impact.
Bogus cop solicitations
LISBON -- Columbiana County Sheriff Dave Smith warns residents the sheriff's department is not making telephone solicitations seeking money. He said two county residents said Saturday they received calls from someone who said they were trying to raise money for relatives of deceased deputies. Smith said the department does not make such requests and in fact is prohibited by law from doing so.
Man arrested in robbery
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said they arrested a Quinby Street man wanted in the Sept. 17 robbery of the Dairy Mart store on U.S. Route 62 in Brookfield Township. George Crawford Jr. was picked up at his home around 1 a.m. Sunday on a Trumbull County, Ohio, warrant. Crawford was in Mercer County Jail on $10,000 bond pending extradition to Ohio. Brookfield police said Crawford is accused of stealing three 18-packs of beer from the store and assaulting a clerk in the process. He faces charges of robbery, assault and theft in Ohio.
Church fashion show
CLARKS MILLS, Pa. -- Clarks Mills United Methodist Church, 3813 Hadley Road, will conduct its annual Fashion Show and Auction from noon to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. All proceeds benefit the Lakeview Pa., Area Helping Hands Center Van Fund. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Helping Hands will have its benefit Fall Hymn Sing at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Countryside Evangelical Congregational Church at 4143 Greenville-Sandy Lake Road. A free will offering will be collected.
Newcomers' brunch
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Hermitage Newcomers Serving the Shenango Valley will sponsor its 2002-03 Kickoff Brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Sharon Country Club on Forker Boulevard. The group is looking for women who are new to the area or women who want to meet new friends. The group holds various activities and service projects throughout the year. Accidental shooting
STONEBORO, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said Kenneth J. Schleifer, 31, of Burdette Road accidentally shot himself in the right calf while target shooting in his yard. He was treated at United Community Hospital for a minor wound shortly after the accident, at 3 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Political debate
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The League of Women Voters of Mercer County will sponsor a debate between Republican state Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, and his Democratic challenger, Kyle Klaric of Hermitage, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the community room of Artman Elementary School on North Hermitage Road. The candidates will respond to questions asked by a three-member panel. Questions will also be accepted from the audience.
Shooting victim update
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dalvon Dumas, 22, of Midlothian Boulevard remained in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center with gunshot wounds to her neck and chest. Dumas, who was shot Sunday as she drove on the South Side, believes the shots were intended for her passenger, reports show. Johnny Love and two of his passengers, Brandon Jones and Joey Mitchell, were arrested Sunday. No charges were filed Monday against Jones, 19, of Ellenwood and Ohio avenues, or Mitchell, 24, who has addresses in Columbus and Conneaut. Traffic charges were filed Monday against Love, 28, of Hudson Avenue, and a charge related to the shooting was expected to be filed today, police said.
