ICE HOCKEY Poland splits twinbill in Ice Zone tourney



Boardman dropped a pair while Canfield gained a tie and loss.
BOARDMAN -- The Poland High ice hockey team split their Friday doubleheader at the Ice Zone Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Bulldogs began their day with a 5-1 rout of Canfield, then dropped a 6-4 decision to North Canton Hoover.
Canfield tied Jackson, 2-2, in its second game.
Boardman dropped two games, losing to Kenston 11-6 and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, 8-0.
In Friday's other games, Hoover defeated Jackson, 5-2; Kenston blasted West Geauga, 13-1; and West Geauga tied CVCA.
The tournament continues today with four more opening round games today and four playoff games this afternoon.
Poland 5, Canfield 1
Brett Pitzulo scored two goals and assisted on another for the Bulldogs. Robbie Wyand also had two goals and an assist.
Matt Kominac netted Poland's other goal. Josh McCann had four assists.
Mike Vrable scored Canfield's goal on assists by Pat Anderson and Steve Kline.
North Canton Hoover 6, Poland 4
Pitzulo, Kominak, Ken Toth and Mike Yatsco scored Poland's goal. Wyand, Alex James, Phil Miner and Drew Souder earned assists for the Bulldogs. Goalie Cody Hiznay made 38 saves.
Chris Hoff and Glenn Ireland both scored two goals for Hoover. Brian Bush and Brandon Palso had the Vikings' other goals.
Canfield 2, Jackson 2
Vrable and Andy Davis scored for the Cardinals. Vrable, Davis and Josh Gestosanti earned assists. Goalie Ryan DeJoe made 21 saves for Canfield.
Jake Thomas and Michael Tucker scored for the Polar Bears.
Kenston 11, Boardman 6
Pat Rafeedie netted four goals for the Spartans. Also scoring for Boardman were Bob Walla and Jim Pipoly.
Pipoly had two assists while Chris Collins, Shawn Fulks, Jonathan Poma, Marc Esposito, Frank DeVidio and Bob Walla had one. Boardman goalie John Yuhaniak made 26 saves.
Scoring four goals for Kenston was Matt Krahe. Joe Recktenwald and Jeff McChance each had two goals while Scott Kennedy, Andrew Kieta and Ryan Ohara had one apiece.
CVCA 8, Boardman 0
Matt Darusz led CVCA with a hattrick. Boardman goalies Chris Collins and Yuhaniak made 15 and five saves, respectively.
