COLUMBIANA -- Members of the Columbiana Area Meals on Wheels program board are seeking new ways to promote the agency's services and raise funds.
Member Larry Rohrer called public awareness of the Meals on Wheels services an "ever-present challenge."
Rohrer said the board considers it a priority to let people know the agency's services are available if needed.
Rohrer said the Meals on Wheels board plans to enter a float in the Columbiana Christmas parade Saturday.
He said board members are encouraging area businesses to participate in the Northern Columbiana County United Way campaign. Columbiana Area Meals on Wheels is one of 21 agencies to receive funding from the local United Way.
Member Bev Grappy said the Columbiana Community Foundation board will donate $5,000 to Columbiana Area Meals on Wheels for general operations.
Rohrer said, however, that most of the agency's funding comes from individual donations.
Communities served
Clients are served in the Columbiana, Leetonia and Washingtonville communities, Rohrer said. The agency provided 527 meals in September.
Heck's Restaurant in Columbiana prepares the meals. Clients receive one hot and one cold meal on weekdays.
He said anyone in those areas needing assistance with daily nutrition may apply for services.
Rohrer said the agency serves not only the elderly, but also disabled residents and those recovering from an illness or injury.
The program board meets monthly. The next meeting will be at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at Heck's Restaurant in conjunction with the agency's volunteer appreciation dinner.
