YOUNGSTOWN -- Brad Dunbar, 25, of North Hazelwood Avenue, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of complicity to commit murder. Dunbar is accused of aiding or abetting the person who shot and killed John Cannell, 32, of Quentin Drive. Cannell collapsed and died Monday afternoon in front of 1004 W. Woodland Ave. after being shot in the chest. Cannell's wife had traded her wedding band for drugs and he went to get it back, police said. Detectives have a description of the shooter and continue to investigate the crime.
Veterans' cash stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- About $3,400 was reported stolen Tuesday from a Mahoning Avenue business that collects donations for disabled veterans. A manager for Benefit Systems of America told police that the money was taken from a desk drawer, and that it does not appear as if someone broke into the business.
3 rings stolen
CANFIELD -- Police are investigating the theft of three rings worth $1,750 from a Callaway Circle home Monday. A woman who lives in the home told police she found the home ransacked at about 11:30 p.m. Police said the rear door to the home had been kicked in.
Motorcyclist sought
CANFIELD -- Police are looking for a speeding motorcyclist who escaped during a chase early Tuesday. An officer said he tried to stop the motorcyclist on Herbert Road at about 1:45 a.m.
Kid with knife in school
YOUNGSTOWN -- A six-inch knife found on a 17-year-old Wilson High School student Tuesday afternoon was confiscated and the boy was taken to the juvenile justice center to face a charge of illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon on school property, police said. The knife was found when the East Philadelphia Avenue boy and two other students suspected of smoking were ordered to empty their pockets.
Host families needed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Pacific Intercultural Exchange is seeking host families for foreign high school students who will arrive in the near future. The English-speaking students between age 15 and 18 have their own spending money, carry accident and health insurance and are eager to share their cultural experiences with American families. They will attend local high schools for periods ranging from a semester to a full academic year. Families who host for P.I.E. are eligible to claim a $50-per-month charitable contribution deduction on itemized tax returns for each month they host a student. Beer, wine at eatery
CORTLAND -- People dining out at one Cortland eatery will be able to order beer or wine with their meal. Cortland had been dry for seven decades. Final official election results released this week show that voters in Cortland's Precinct E approved beer and wine sales at Uncle Buck's Restaurant, at High and Main Streets, by a vote of 155 to 149. Unofficial results released election night had shown the proposal failed.
Trash pickup delay
GIRARD -- There will be a one-day delay in trash pickup here this week because of Thanksgiving. Trash should be placed at the curb Friday evening for Saturday pickup.
Explosive detonated
SALEM -- The Youngstown Police Department bomb squad detonated an explosive device Tuesday after it was discovered near Painter and Egypt roads in Perry Township. A township police officer discovered the device, which was in the middle of Egypt Road, about 3:23 a.m. Tuesday. The 9-inch-high cylindrically shaped object had a fuse that looked as though someone had tried to light it.
It appears the object was placed in the road as a prank, a police spokesman said.
