New Castle baby's death being probed

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Authorities are waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine whether charges will be filed in the death of an infant found in the North Hill area.
Lawrence County District Attorney Matthew Mangino said the autopsy was started Monday at the Ellwood City Hospital by Dr. Karl Williams and should be finished sometime today.
The infant was turned over to New Castle police about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
Coroner Russell S. Noga said the child was wrapped up in a plastic bag and had been kept in a shoe box on the third floor of a Park Avenue home.
The infant's mother told him the child was stillborn in September and she panicked and hid the baby, he said.
"She states there was no movement inside [her] for the last three months [of the pregnancy]. She said she became scared after the baby was born," he said.
Noga said it's unclear if others knew the woman was pregnant.
The woman apparently told someone else about the baby early Sunday morning and that person called police, the coroner said.
Mangino said the immediate cause of death was unclear because of decomposition.
