MINNEAPOLIS -- Even after her team set a school scoring record, Minnesota coach Pam Borton had her doubts about the Golden Gophers.
Lindsay Whalen had 23 points and nine assists and Corrin Von Wald added 21 points Saturday as No. 16 Minnesota set a school scoring record in a 116-73 win over Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne in the Subway Basketball Classic.
"We can still score a lot of points," Borton said, "but we don't know if we can play any defense yet."
Kadidja Andersson had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Kim Prince added 16 points for the Golden Gophers (1-0), who broke the previous scoring record of 115 points, set in March 1983 against Purdue.
First year coach
Borton replaced Brenda Oldfield (now known by her maiden name Frese), the national coach of the year in her lone season at Minnesota, who's now at Maryland.
The Gophers (1-0) allowed an average of more than 71 points last season, and Borton's first priority is to get the team playing effective man-to-man pressure defense.
"It's a work in progress," said Whalen, the Big Ten Player of the Year last season.
Amy Gearlds scored 18 points, Lindy Carey had 17 and Hillary O'Connell 12 for the Mastodons, who have only three players back from last year's 4-23 team and are playing in Division I for the first time. They've got eight freshman on the roster.
Vanderbilt 68, Boston U. 51
BOSTON -- Jenni Benningfield had 16 points and 13 rebounds as No. 11 Vanderbilt and new coach Melanie Balcomb opened the season with a victory.
The Commodores outscored the Terriers 46-28 in the second half after trailing 23-22 at halftime.
Katie Terhune led the Terriers (0-1) with 20 points.
Vanderbilt will play at Syracuse on Tuesday night.
