Within Air Force
Air Force Col. Lyn D. (South) Sherlock has assumed command of the 62nd Operations Group, McChord Air Force Base, Wash. She previously was transportation command liaison to the Central Command and Special Operations Command.
Sherlock, a 1978 graduate of Columbiana High School, earned a bachelor of science degree in 1982 from the Air Force Academy and a master of aeronautical science in 1993 from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Fla. She also graduated from the Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College, both at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.; and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., where she received a master of science degree in national resource strategy.
Sherlock was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1982, and is a command pilot with more than 3,500 hours in the T-37, T-38, C-141B and C-17. She is a veteran of Desert Shield-Desert Storm, and in 1990 piloted an aircraft that landed at a Russian air base and brought back a missile which is on display at the Smithsonian Institute. She has received numerous awards and decorations, including the Defense Superior Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters.
Sherlock's twin sister, Lt. Col. Lori (South) Ramirez, is also a graduate of Columbiana High School. She is deputy support commander at Los Angeles AFB and has been selected to attend the Air War College at Maxwell AFB, Ala., next summer.
Sherlock and her husband, Army Col. Richard, stationed in Pittsburgh, have two daughters, Stephanie and Heather.
Sherlock's mother, Kathryn Stevens, formerly of Youngstown, lives in Farrell, Pa., and her father, Don South, lives in Bemidji, Minn. She has two brothers, Brett Treimer of Pulaski, Pa., and Steve South of Dallas, Texas.
Airman 1st class
Air Force Airman 1st Class Amanda L. Darrah was promoted to her present rank while assigned to the 41st Rescue Squadron at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. She is the daughter of Wilma L. and Stephen D. Sylak of Mineral Ridge and is a 2001 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School.
Marine corporal
Marine Corps Cpl. Michael Czombos, son of Paul and Debra Czombos of Austintown, was promoted to his present rank while serving with the 10th Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Charlie Battery, Camp LeJeune, N.C. He is a 2000 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
VETERANS
Thunder Ball
Thunder Ball, a semiformal night of dancing and entertainment to celebrate Rolling Thunder, Ohio Chapter 4's third anniversary, is Saturday at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex, 1620 Motor Inn Drive, Liberty. The cocktail hour is 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m., followed by music and dancing. Tickets are $30 per person. Phil Dirt and the Dozers will perform.
Rolling Thunder members participate in Veterans Affairs hospital visits, fund raising and lobbying for legislation to aid the POW/MIAs and other veterans issues.

Panel cancels meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission has canceled its regular meeting scheduled for Friday. Also, the service commission office, 2801 Market St., will be closed from 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to 7:30 a.m. Dec. 2.
Dog tags from 'Nam
A West Coast woman, who uses just one name, Stacey, 33, has established a Web site -- vietnamdogtags.com -- aimed at reuniting military identification tags (dog tags) she recovered in Vietnam with their owners or loved ones.
On her Web page, Stacey, a firefighter and paramedic, tells the story of how she backpacked through Vietnam buying U.S. dog tags where she found them. It also contains an alphabetized list of the tags recovered, and information on how the veterans themselves, or their families, can retrieve them.
Cancer donations
AKRON -- The Ohio Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars donated $67,021 to Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron for cancer research, and a total of $335,105 to the National VFW for cancer programs, making Ohio the top state contributor.

Learned Arabic
Air Force Airman Herbert F. Tinsley graduated with honors from the Defense Language Institute in California, where he learned to speak and read Arabic. Tinsley is a son of Monessa Ferguson-Tinsley of Pittsburgh and Herb G. Tinsley Jr. of Struthers. Airman Tinsley is a 1998 graduate of Youngstown Ursuline High School and is stationed at Goodfellow AFB, Texas.
Dynamic Response
Navy Lt. j.g. Lon Prater and Petty Officer 3rd Class George M. Lingenfelter, recently completed Dynamic Response '02 while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, based in Norfolk, Va.
Prater's wife, Angie, is the daughter of Keith Clark of Masury.
Lingenfelter, son of Kathy L. Lingenfelter of Austintown, is a 1999 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
HONORS
Double awards
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard J. Cappellino, son of Rick and Rose Cappellino of Austintown, received the Good Conduct Award and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving as an apprentice aviation forecaster and tactical team leader at Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Detachment, Fallon, Nev. Now stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Cappellino is a 1999 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
REUNIONS
Army National Guard anti-aircraft battalions: April 26, 2003, Brentford House, Hubbard.
