NHL ROUNDUP Saturday's game

Islanders 3, Rangers 1
NEW YORK -- Now Bryan Trottier knows what it's like to be done in by the Islanders' top line.
The trio of Brad Isbister, Alexei Yashin and rookie Mattias Weinhandl combined for three goals and nine points in the third period, rallying the Islanders to a 3-1 victory Saturday over the Rangers.
No, this line isn't close to the one Trottier, Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies formed on Long Island in the 1980s. That group won four Stanley Cups, and each player made the Hall Of Fame.
But it sure looked great against the Rangers and Trottier, their first-year coach.
Isbister scored twice, and linemates Weinhandl and Yashin each had three assists. Mark Parrish had a power-play goal early in the third that brought the Islanders into a 1-1 tie.
"I think the whole team played well," Isbister said. "We got some extra wind in the third period after the power-play goal. We really picked it up after that."
Tom Poti gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the second period.
It was not what Trottier hoped for in his first game as a head coach against the Islanders. He said he didn't feel strange at all coaching against the team he'd always been associated with.
"We'd love to beat every team," Trottier said. "The fact that it has that rivalry, atmosphere, and attention, I think it would have been even better."
Trottier missed three of the Rangers' five previous games because of a suspension and back pain. They were 3-0 without him and are only 6-11-3 with him. He has not coached a win since Nov. 7.
"Any time you're heading into the third period with a one-goal lead and you're at home, it is a big game against a big rival," Rangers forward Eric Lindros said. "We're upset right now."
Isbister scored his first at 8:20 after Yashin made a diving play to keep the puck in the Rangers' zone. He added his second goal at 10:43 after the puck hit his skate, then the post before coming back to him.
Weinhandl, in just his fifth NHL game, was involved in all of it and already has found his comfort zone with Isbister and Yashin. He entered with only one assist.
"You just have to hold your stick to the ice and know the puck is coming," the 22-year-old Swedish forward said. "It's pretty easy."
The Islanders tied it at 1 on Parrish's goal 2:23 into the third period, and just eight seconds into a power play.
Yashin gained control of the puck in the left circle and sent a shot in on Dan Blackburn from the corner. The rebound came to Parrish, who shook off defenseman Darius Kasparaitis in front and jammed a shot in.
Just seconds after Blackburn made a nice skate save to deny Kenny Jonsson, the Rangers rushed the puck up the ice to take a 1-0 lead. Poti crossed the blue line and fired a slap shot that beat Chris Osgood's outstretched left pad at 6:24. Petr Nedved was credited with the second assist on the goal, giving him points in six of seven games.
The Islanders, dressed in their home white jerseys, wrapped up their five-game road trip 3-1-1.
"It was our best win of the year so far," coach Peter Laviolette said of his 8-11-2 team. "We dug a little hole early on in the season and now we are three points back from a playoff spot."
The Rangers' power play struggle again, going 0-for-5 against the league's third-worst penalty-killers. The Rangers have just five power-play goals in the last 74 chances.
"It's definitely the reason we're not winning these games," Poti said. "If we scored at least one goal on the man advantage, the game is ours."
Blackburn made 26 saves in his eighth straight start for Mike Richter, out after having a concussion. Osgood had 25 saves.
Trottier is first on the Islanders' career lists with 1,123 games played and 853 assists. He is second in goals with 500. ... Laviolette played all 12 of his NHL games with the Rangers. He never recorded a point. ... Islanders G Garth Snow began serving a two-game NHL suspension.
