Holden Arboretum in Ohio is a natural sanctuary and a nationally known center of scientific study. A new book, "The Holden Arboretum," celebrates that dual role by recounting its history and capturing its beauty through a generous use of color photographs.
The book tells the story of the arboretum's genesis in the mind of Cleveland businessman Albert "Bert" Holden and the financial maneuvering that brought the idea to fruition after his death. It follows the arboretum's growth from 100 acres in 1931 to its present 3,400 acres, an area that encompasses display gardens as well as such natural features as forests, meadows, rock ledges, lakes, rivers and wetlands.
The book also tells the arboretum's story in photos that document its changing face through the seasons.
"The Holden Arboretum" is written by Steve Love and illustrated with the work of environmental photographer Ian Adams. It is published by the University of Akron Press.
The book costs $39.95 for hardback and $27.95 for paperback. It is available in bookstores and may be ordered at a 20 percent discount through Dec. 31 at (877) 827-7377.
Insulation advice
When finishing rooms in your house, you need to add some insulation to the walls. This is not only for comfort and lower utility bills, but the building codes in most areas will require a certain level of wall insulation. G2
