WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Joey Nichols ran for 121 yards and a touchdown and Washington & amp; Jefferson's defense yielded just 26 passing yards as the Presidents beat Christopher Newport 24-10 in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs on Saturday.
Washington & amp; Jefferson (9-2) is making its 15th playoff appearance in 19 years and will play at Trinity in the second round next Saturday.
Christopher Newport (6-5) made its second playoff appearance despite starting a football program just two years ago, but couldn't sustain any offense, running just 45 plays to 84 for Washington & amp; Jefferson.
Trinity, Texas 48,Mary Hardin-Baylor 38
SAN ANTONIO -- Roy Hampton threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another to lead Trinity.
Hampton went 17-of-27 for 341 yards and rushed seven times for 24 yards for Trinity, which also beat Mary Hardin-Baylor (10-1) in the first round last year 30-6.
Mary Hardin-Baylor cut the deficit to 34-31 on Cody Fredenberg's 12-yard TD run early in the fourth.
Trinity responded with Matt Federle's 5-yard TD run and Jacob Respondek's 17-yard TD catch five minutes later to make the score 48-31.
John Carroll 27, Hobart 7
GENEVA, N.Y. -- Tom Arth threw for three touchdowns as John Carroll defeated Hobart.
Adam Therrien teamed up with Arth, catching for 146 yards and touchdown passes of 75 and 25 yards in the second quarter, and a six-yard pass in the third.
Muhlenberg 56,UMass-Dartmouth 6
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Matt Bernardo rushed for 174 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Muhlenberg.
Bernardo, who carried 16 times, did most of his damage before intermission, scoring on runs of 44, 65 and 9 yards to help Muhlenberg (10-1) to a 21-6 halftime lead.
Wittenberg 34, Hanover 33
HANOVER, Ind. -- Greg Cornett passed for 336 yards and four touchdowns Saturday to lead Wittenberg.
The Tigers (10-1), who will play at North Coast Conference-rival Wabash in the second round next Saturday, came just inches from being eliminated.
The Panthers (10-1) nearly got the winning score twice in the final 25 seconds, but Nick Schmidt was ruled out of bounds on a catch in the end zone and Hanover missed a 37-yard field goal.
Wheaton 42, Alma 14
ALMA, Mich. -- Wheaton held Alma to 206 yards in total offense.
The Thunder (10-1) advance to face Mount Union next Saturday.
Wheaton finished with 458 yards in total offense including 169 yards on the ground. Garrett Granberg led the rushing attack with 73 yards on 10 carries. Chad Bradley completed 20 of 32 passes for 291 yards. Andrew King had 10 receptions for 172 yards.
Brockport State 16, Springfield 0
BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Senior Adam Webster had 125 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown and broke the single season rushing record in leading SUNY Brockport over Springfield.
King's, Pa. 28, Salisbury 0
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Derek Zambino returned a blocked punt 43 yards for a touchdown as King's beat Salisbury.
The game was scoreless when Kamau Woolard blocked Rick Nistler's punt in the first period. Zambino scooped up the loose ball and ran for the only TD King's (9-2) would need.
St. John's, Minn. 31, Redlands 24
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Ross Denne threw for 376 yards and two touchdowns as sixth-ranked St. John's beat Redlands.
