Browns release Bowers, sign LB Lenoy Jones
BEREA -- The Cleveland Browns released fullback R.J. Bowers on Tuesday and signed free agent linebacker Lenoy Jones, who was originally selected by the team in the 1999 expansion draft.
The Browns also signed cornerback Ray Walls from the practice squad to the active roster.
Bowers, a West Middlesex High school and Grove City college graduate, had been brought up from the practice squad last week after tight end Aaron Shea was lost for the season with an ankle injury. Bowers, who owns Grove City's career rushing record, played in Sunday's 24-15 win over the New Orleans Saints. He played with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season.
Jones spent three seasons in Cleveland but was released on Aug. 27 mainly because the Browns had drafted three rookie linebackers this year. He did not sign with any other team.
The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Jones missed the first eight games last season while recovering from a knee injury. In 1999 and 2000, he was a special teams star for the Browns.
