Bono to help orphansand fight against AIDS
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Bono will be in Nebraska next month for World AIDS Day.
The 42-year-old U2 lead singer will be in Lincoln on Dec. 1, said Nelson Okuku Miruka, president of Save Sub-Saharan Orphans, a volunteer group that raises money for African orphanages.
He'll present an evening program at the Lied Center for the performing arts to raise awareness of the continent's growing health crisis, Miruka said this week.
AIDS and African debt relief are two of Bono's top political causes.
He traveled to Africa in May with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill to draw attention to the needs of the continent.
Presley's teen digsgetting makeover
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The former public housing project where Elvis Presley lived as a teenager is undergoing a major renovation.
The former Lauderdale Courts will become Uptown Square, a 347-apartment complex with both rent-subsidized and nonsubsidized apartments.
The site is several blocks north of the downtown business district and east of the Memphis Pyramid, a sports and entertainment arena.
A plaque noting that Presley's family lived at Lauderdale Courts went on display Wednesday. The Presleys lived at the project from 1949-53 after moving to Memphis from Tupelo, Miss.
Presley died at his Graceland mansion in Memphis in 1977.
"I think these four years did more to shape who he became than any other period I know of," said Jack Soden, chief executive of Elvis Presley Enterprises, the business arm of the Presley estate.
The plaque notes that Presley practiced his guitar in the project's basement laundry room.
The future of Lauderdale Courts has been under discussion by the city for several years. Most of the original housing project is being renovated through a $36 million public-private measure, with the other parts demolished.
The first apartments are expected to be finished next fall.
Iglesias finds subfor Kournikova
Enrique Iglesias, who still likes something on the side when girlfriend Anna Kournikova's not around, was caught by British journos "snogging the face off" model Emma Jones at an awards show after-party last week. The Latin lothario, who told Jones "I shouldn't be doing this" just before shoving his tongue down her throat, has been calling Emma, 24, ever since.
Norton rejects giftfor making movie
Edward Norton, who is so ticked off at Paramount for forcing him to make "The Italian Job," he's returned unopened a gift the studio delivered to him on his first day of shooting. Norton has owed the studio a movie since making "Primal Fear" with Richard Gere in 1996 under a three-picture deal. Norton rejected over a dozen scripts until Paramount threatened to take him to court.
Berry says Brosnanis favorite 007
It's easy to guess who's Halle Berry's favorite James Bond.
Berry, who plays an American agent in the new Bond movie "Die Another Day," leans toward her co-star, Pierce Brosnan, now in his fourth outing as agent 007 since taking over the role with 1995's "GoldenEye."
"Pierce is my Bond," Berry said. "Really, when I started to watch Bond movies, Pierce was the man."
Berry's runner-up is the original Bond, Sean Connery, whom she found charming for the "lightness and silliness that he brought to it. He didn't take himself too seriously," she said.
Berry's favorite past Bond girl?
"I really like Pussy Galore Honor Blackman in 1964's 'Goldfinger,' and I'm not sure if it's the name I still love so much or if it really was her."
