Volleyball playershonored by Horizon
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State volleyball freshmen Nickole Kennedy and Angie Pasquinelli were named to the 2002 Horizon League All-Newcomer team by a vote of the league coaches.
Kennedy, a 6-foot-1 right side hitter, averaged 2.73 kills and 0.70 blocks per game, while Pasquinelli, a 5-foot-7 setter, already ranks sixth on the YSU assist chart with 994 while averaging 8.8 per game.
Penguins oustedfrom tournament
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Loyola defeated the Youngstown State volleyball team 30-14, 30-24, 30-18 in the first round of the Horizon League tournament Friday.
Annie Buschur had seven kills, Michele Batton had six kills, while Colleen Royer and Melanie Pounders each had five kills for YSU (8-24).
Angie Pasquinelli delivered 17 sets and Royer was in with seven digs. Loyola is 26-4.

Kevin Tuminelloto Georgia Tech
BOARDMAN -- Kevin Tuminello of Boardman has committed to play football at Georgia Tech University.
Tuminello, the 6-foot-5, 285-pound center/defensive tackle for the Spartans, was a first-team All-Northeast Ohio selection and an All-Steel Valley Conference pick.
He carries a 3.77 grade-point average and is a member of the National Honor Society.
West Branch gradleads Geneva to win
MINNEAPOLIS -- Ben Swallow, a graduate of West Branch High School, was 15-for-25 passing for 107 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown pass, as Geneva defeated Northwestern College 19-9 in the Victory Bowl Friday.
Kelly Lennox rushed 27 times for 171 yards, while Josh Mullen had 20 runs for 135 yards for Geneva (7-5).
Northwestern is 8-2.
Area runnersin national event
MINNEAPOLIS -- Nicole Drouhard, a Canfield High graduate, and Stacy Havaich, a Fitch High graduate, will lead the Baldwin-Wallace College women's cross country team into the NCAA Division III national championship meet today at St. Olaf College.
Drouhard has helped the Yellow Jackets to six meet titles, including the fourth straight Ohio Athletic Conference crown. She is a four-time All-OAC top 10 runner. Her best time this fall is 19 minutes, 26 seconds.
Havaich, a junior, is a newcomer to the B-W program after spending two years at Div. I Ohio University. Her best time this season is 19:56.
N. Falls, Ursulinegrads honored
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Westminster College football program has named three players as "Titans of the Week" after the season-ending 33-29 win over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Waynesburg College.
Junior quarterback Kevin Huber of Newton Falls was named Offensive Titan of the Week. Huber completed 25-of-40 passes for 344 yards with no interceptions and three touchdowns, all career-highs. For his effort, he was also named PAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Sophomore defensive back Kevin Kresinski of Oil City, Pa., was tabbed as Defensive Titan of the Week against the Yellow Jackets. Kresinski totaled six tackles and added a blocked punt.
Earning Special Teams Titan of the Week laurels was sophomore linebacker Brad Hochendoner, an Ursuline High graduate from Lake Milton. Hochendoner was credited with an assist tackle and was honored for his strong play on the Titan coverage teams.
By finishing 6-4 overall (4-1 and second place in the PAC), the Titan football program secured its 47th winning season in the past 51 years.
Rock gets reps
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Six members of the Slippery Rock University football team have been named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division.
First team selections were senior free safety Brad Foor, sophomore defensive tackle Brian Godfrey and senior wide receiver Ryan McKavish.
Chosen to the second team were senior punter Mike Halberg, senior strong safety Shawn Hanzely and junior center Bill Ricks.
Canfield hockey'sopener spoiled
BOARDMAN --The Canfield Cardinals hockey home opener was spoiled by West Geauga, 5-2, in the Cleveland High School League at the Ice Zone Friday night.
Chris Lethre had all of West Geauga's goals while Josh Gestasoni and Tim Jones scored for Canfield. Jeff Kane and Mike Vrable assisted on the Cardinals' goals.
Witmer prevails inPlantations event
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Ariel Witmer of North Lima fired a two-round 185 to take first place in the girls 8-11 division of the Plantations Junior Golf tournament at Cooks Creek Golf Course.
