Republicans everywhere you look ... well, almost
EDITOR:
We have a Republican governor, a Republican state legislature, a Republication president, a Republican House and Senate in Washington, and what about the Mahoning Valley? Yes, it is business as usual. The voters have elected and re-elected the same mediocre, ineffective, and lackluster Democrats to represent them in Columbus and Washington. Timmy Ryan is a prime example. Wow!
A downward spiraling area economy, our younger generation leaving the area, no new meaningful business to speak of, a continual lowering of our quality of life -- what is the voters' answer to all of this? Business as usual.
Nov. 5, 2002, was another sad day for Mahoning and Trumbull County.

Every child is a gift
EDITOR:
After reading the letter that discussed the life that lies ahead for an unwanted child, I felt compelled to write my first letter to The Vindicator.
The description given regarding children being put out of the house, running away and in "many cases becoming a thief" can also apply to children who were initially wanted by their parents. The writer should not want on her conscience the thought that she was in any way responsible for such a sentence being given to even one child, let alone thousands.
Well, I have news for the writer. If she thinks the death sentence of 40 million babies since Roe vs. Wade is easier on her conscience, she better examine her conscience better.
I, too, send out literature; regarding abortion and the "choices" available. In that literature the facts are pointed out about the dangers of having an abortion. The risks involved regarding breast cancer, bowel injury, hemorrhage, infection and the most serious and long lasting is "Post-Abortion Syndrome." Some of the symptoms are depression, guilt, anxiety, low self esteem and even suicidal thoughts. I give out the facts about abortion because I don't want on my conscience the thought that I was remiss in educating even one woman regarding her "choices."
Besides, I firmly believe that every child is a gift from God. If not for the birth mother, then for the adoption mother. Every person born has a purpose in this world that only he can fulfill.

Senate bill was unfairto pro-life protesters
EDITOR:
Re: your Nov. 18 editorial & quot;Abortion issue is poison pill to bankruptcy reform bill & quot;:
On Nov. 14, the House of Representatives defeated the rule on the Bankruptcy Reform Bill (H.R. 333) 172-yes to 243-no. The rule would have allowed for debate on the conference report (H.Rept.107-617) on the bill.
For several months, the bankruptcy reform bill was stalled in conference committee because of the abortion provision that was inserted in the Senate version of the bill. H.R. 333 contained language that would unfairly penalize nonviolent protesters at abortion clinics by excluding them from the protection of the bankruptcy laws.
After defeating the rule that would have allowed enactment of this punitive provision, the House at 2 a.m. on Nov. 15 approved an amended bankruptcy bill without this provision and sent it to the Senate.
The true meaning of Rep. Chris Smith's remarks, alluded to in your editorial, was not that & quot;fanatics who oppose abortion under any circumstances should be allowed to violate the law. & quot; He simply expressed the thought that people shouldn't be unfairly penalized for defending life by means of peaceful civil disobedience.
