YOUNGSTOWN -- Councilman John Nittoli, D-7th, called police Thursday to report intimidation by an Alamo Place resident. Nittoli, 73, told police that he went to a house in the 3700 block to investigate zoning complaints and, while there, was approached by the angry resident. The 35-year-old resident told Nittoli, "If you keep messing with me, you won't have a house," reports show. The resident also threatened to sexually assault Nittoli's wife and drove past the councilman's house several times, police said. Officers went to the house on Alamo but didn't find the resident at home.
Clerk is cited
YOUNGSTOWN -- A clerk at a South Side beverage drive-through was cited Thursday evening in the sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors. Police said they gave money to an undercover 16-year-old, who emerged with a 16-ounce beer can and a pack of cigarettes from A Foods, 99 Essex St., around 6:30 p.m. The citation was issued to the clerk, Nabil A. Moatassem, 46, of Wheeler Avenue, Hubbard. Police said they had received numerous complaints of underage sales there.
Ruling in Colon case
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County judge has ruled that Jackie Colon is not mentally competent to stand trial for the December 2000 killing of a 3-month-old baby. Colon, 16, is being held in the county juvenile detention center on a charge of murder. Judge Theresa Dellick of juvenile court handed down a ruling Thursday. The ruling followed a psychiatric evaluation of Colon. Judge Dellick said Colon's case now will be sent to probate court, where Judge Timothy P. Maloney will determine whether she should be committed to a mental institution. Authorities say Colon threw 3-month-old Alex Zalovcik out a second-story window and then stabbed him to death.
Pit bull bites woman
YOUNGSTOWN -- A West Chalmers Avenue woman walking home from a store Thursday was bitten by a pit bull after asking the dog's owner not to let it go, reports show. The 44-year-old victim said she suffered seven puncture wounds to her right foot as the owner, who lives on West Marion Avenue, watched. Police said the woman also suffered a bone fracture in her foot that required surgery. She was advised to contact the prosecutor's office, health department and dog pound.
Theft reported
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a former teller at First National Bank stole a total of $6,150 from the accounts of three bank customers, including his grandmother, in the last few months. A bank manager told police the former teller forged the signatures of the customers on withdrawal slips at the First National Bank branches in Austintown, Boardman and Youngstown.
Cops stop stolen car
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three 13-year-old boys joyriding in a stolen 1986 Oldsmobile 88 Thursday evening on the South Side tried to elude police but were eventually stopped on Hilton Avenue near Erie Street. The officers got two versions from the boys of who actually peeled the steering column with a screwdriver -- found in the car -- and stole it. The boys, from East Boston, Overland and West LaClede avenues, were taken to the juvenile justice center to face charges of auto theft. All are seventh-graders at Choffin Career Center.
