BASKETBALL Florida freshmen lead way in rout of Eastern Illinois



The Gators' 99-65 victory moved them into the semifinals of the Preseason NIT.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida freshman Matt Walsh had 20 points, nine assists, six rebounds and five steals to lead No. 8 Florida to a 99-65 victory over Eastern Illinois in the Preseason NIT.
The Gators (2-0) will play Stanford next Wednesday in New York in the semifinals.
Fellow freshmen Anthony Roberson also scored 20 points, and Rashid Al-Kaleem went 3-for-7 from 3-point range and finished with 11 points.
Senior defensive specialist Justin Hamilton played a big part in shutting down Henry Domercant of Eastern Illinois (1-1). Domercant averaged 26 points last season and scored 36 in the opener Monday against Boise State.
Against Hamilton and the Gators, he finished with seven points on 2-for-9 shooting. He also had 10 rebounds and seven turnovers.
David Lee finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for Florida. Matt Bonner had 15 points and Hamilton had five assists.
Alaska Fairbanks 78,Wisconsin-Green Bay 55
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Brad Oleson scored 21 points, including 12 from the free-throw line, to lead Division II Alaska Fairbanks in the first round of the Top of the World Classic.
Alaska Fairbanks (3-0) built a 12-point first-half lead on 3-pointers and free throws, then reeled off 11 straight points after halftime.
The Nanooks' pressing defense forced 14 first-half turnovers and 21 for the game. Alaska Fairbanks hounded the taller Phoenix (0-1) every time they tried to force the ball inside.
Forced to shoot from the outside, Wisconsin-Green Bay made just 2-of-18 3-point attempts and shot just 34 percent from the field.
Oleson, who was 12-for-12 from the line, pulled down five rebounds and handed out four assists. Steve Towne added 15 points and five rebounds for Alaska Fairbanks.
Greg Babcock led Wisconsin-Green Bay with 12 points, nine in the second half, and eight rebounds.
Nebraska 68, Centenary 45
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Corey Simms had 10 points and six rebounds for Nebraska in the other game of the Top of the World Classic.
Josh Thibodeaux led Centenary with 11 points, and Shawn Davis had seven points and nine rebounds.
Women
CANTON -- Malone's Kim Mast and Shuana Masonbrink combined for 48 points to help the Pioneers to an 85-55 victory over Ursuline.
Mast made 12-of-14 shots for a game-high 26 points. Masonbrink came off the bench to add 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
Joy Wilkinson had 12 assists for Malone (3-2).
