Lawrence County UW makes final appeal

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County United Way is making its final appeal for donations.
Volunteers have raised 81 percent or $584,133 of this year's goal, according to numbers reported at a meeting Wednesday. The organization hopes to raise $720,000 by year's end.
Gayle Young, Lawrence UW executive director, said volunteers have had to rely more on individual donors this year rather than large companies and businesses that are giving less because of the drop in the economy and stock market.
She noted the need for United Way help continues to grow in the community. Most recently, 124 families of striking Universal-Rundle employees signed up for United Way programs that include food baskets and other help, she said.
"Our needs are continuing to grow," she added.
The Lawrence County United Way supports 19 agencies in the county including the City Rescue Mission, Boy Scouts of America, the American Red Cross and Contact EARS.
