Baseball skills camp at Beeghly
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State baseball program will hold a skills camp for boys and girls from age 7 to high school seniors Dec. 27-28 at Beeghly Center and will feature three options for participants depending on their desired area of focus.
The first option will be from 9 a.m. to noon and will be for general players looking to improve their overall skills, covering fielding, throwing, base running and hitting.
The second option will be a videotaped session for pitchers from 12:30 p.m. to 2.
The final option is for players who want to attend camp for both sessions. Each program will be advised by the entire baseball coaching staff.
The first option will cost $85 and pitchers $45. The combined program will be $95. A $10 late fee will be charged for those not registered before Dec. 24.

Softball recruits
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University softball coach Christy Cameron signed two players to continue their athletic careers at YSU.
Karlie Burnell and Tricia Hilbish are both pitchers. Burnell, from Brampton, Ontario, led her team to a fourth place finish in the Canadian national championship.
Hilbish posted an 18-0 record at Uniontown Lake with a 0.74 ERA.

ONN to televiseHarding-Massillon
CANTON -- Ohio News Network will televise Saturday's Division I state semifinal football game between Warren Harding and Massillon Washington. Kickoff is 7 p.m. from Fawcett Stadium.
Friday at 7:30 p.m., ONN will televise the Div. II semifinal between Olmsted Falls and Nordonia from Parma.

NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Tickets are now on sale at Springfield Local High School for the Midland boys basketball tournament Nov. 29-30.
Friday at 6 p.m. Blackhawk meets Canon McMillan, followed by Springfield taking on East Liverpool at 8.
Rocker's Darlingto open new JCC
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cleveland Rocker guard Helen Darling will cut the ribbon to officially open the newly-renovated Jewish Community Center gymnasium Sunday from 1 p.m. until to 2 p.m.
Darling will kick off the JCC's Junior NBA/WNBA basketball program for kids grade K-6 and sign autographs on WNBA merchandise to be provided.

* CLEVELAND -- Megan Sanko, a 2001 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High, earned her second letter as a sophomore on the Case Western Reserve University women's volleyball team.
A 5-8 outside hitter, Sanko appeared in two games this season for the Spartans (8-32, 3-13 University Athletic Association).
* GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College sophomore midfielder Katie Mound, a Southeast graduate, was named first team for the second straight year on the All-Presidents' Athletic Conference soccer team.
She led Thiel in scoring and finished fifth in the PAC this season with 30 points, scoring 12 goals and had six assists.
* NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College's Nevin Baker has been named to the Verizon College Division II All-District football team.
A 6-3, 235-pound senior tight end, Baker is a two-year start and a four-year letterman for the Titans. He has caught 12 passes for 125 yards for Westminster (5-4, 3-1 PAC).
* SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University's Louis Jamison has been a first-team member of the Verizon District II Academic All-American College Division football team.
A 6 foot, 4 inch, 235-pound junior defensive tackle, Jamison has a 3.62 grade point average as a Health and Physical Education major.
* EDINBORO, Pa. -- Julie Nemergut, a freshman on the Edinboro University women's cross country team from South Range High, has made the All-NCAA Division III East Regional cross country team.
Nemergut gained the honors by placing sixth out of 139 runners in 24:10 over the 6-kilometer course, at the East Regional Championships held last Saturday at Canaan Valley, W. Va.
Nemergut helped Edinboro to place third to qualify for the NCAA National Championships Nov. 23 at Ashland (Ohio) University.
Giacchetta's winstouch football title
YOUNGSTOWN -- John Linden threw four touchdown passes including a pair to Bob Zaku that covered 15 and 20 yards as Giacchetta's Lounge defeated the Affiliates 31-6 in the championship game of the Youngstown Touch Football League.
Giacchetta's won all 13 starts to give the league its first undefeated champion since 1972.
Linden also hooked up with Joe McHenry for a 15-yard scoring heave and Steve Valley for a 25-yard touchdown. Mark Griffiths kicked a 35-yard field goal and four conversions.
Todd Opalick had two interceptions and Walley Ford another.
For the Affiliates (10-3), Frank Scott threw a 35-yard TD pass to Ahmit Jamal.

Wedge pickedto throw first pitch
CLEVELAND -- New Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge will toss out the first pitch of the holiday season as Grand Marshall of the KeyBank American Legion Parade in downtown Cleveland Saturday.
