WARREN Board applauds attendance marks
WARREN -- Eight of the district's 12 elementary schools achieved attendance above the Ohio Department of Education's 93 percent standard during the 2001-02 school year.
School board members recognized the schools for outstanding building attendance during their meeting Tuesday.
The board commended Alden for 94.6 percent attendance; Devon, 94.4 percent; Emerson, 93.8 percent; Garfield, 94.8 percent; Laird, 93.8 percent; Lincoln, 93.5 percent; McGuffey, 94 percent and Secrest, 93.7 percent.
McKinley, Horace Mann, Jefferson and Roosevelt elementary schools didn't make the list.
Board members also recognized 24 elementary school teachers whose classes achieved 95-percent pupil attendance for six months or more during the past school year. Thirteen middle-school teachers whose pupils' attendance reached the 93-percent benchmark for five grading periods last year also were commended.
Official's comments
Gordon S. Hazen, district supervisor of student and community services, said that during the 2000-01 school year, 11 elementary school and nine middle-school teachers were recognized for reaching the 93-percent mark with pupil attendance.
"So we're almost double," he said. "This year we're even higher than last year. For the first two months, we exceeded the 93-percent mark for the district."
He cited efforts of building principals, teachers, pupils and parents as components in reaching the goal.
"And there's one more component emphasizing this and that's Gordon," said Superintendent Betty English.
