BROOKFIELD -- A 14-year-old middle-school pupil has died as the result of an auto accident Sunday night.
Johnathan D. Yensick, 7800 Elm St., Masury, was pronounced dead Monday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center in Youngstown.
The Brookfield Middle School eighth-grader was a son of Brookfield High School principal John Yensick.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the boy took the family's 2002 Pontiac Grand Am shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
The car was northbound on Standard Avenue when it went out of control on the wet pavement and hit a utility pole and a railroad crossing sign at Oak Street.
New concession stand
CORTLAND -- Lakeview Board of Education has hired an architect to design a $60,000 concession, restroom and storage building at the stadium.
The building, planned for completion by fall, will replace a similar facility destroyed by arson. The district's insurance policy should cover the cost, said Superintendent Matt Chojnacki.
A $7,600 contract to design the structure was awarded to E.S. Jakubick and Associates of Cortland.
Chief appeals reprimand
WARREN -- A hearing before the city's civil service commission is set for 2 p.m. Nov. 27.
Police Chief John Mandopoulos is appealing a written reprimand issued by Mayor Hank Angelo for failing to obey orders and comply with department procedures.
Angelo concluded that Mandopoulos failed to obey a Sept. 27, 2001, order from safety-service director Fred Harris to make sure all police officers use the time clock when they arrive at and leave work.
The mayor also said the chief failed to obey Harris' order of Dec. 10, 2001, to prevent lieutenants from filling in as captain without Harris' approval and that Mandopoulos has not complied with an order to complete investigations into citizen complaints within 30 days.
Pedestrian death
BROOKFIELD -- A Sharpsville, Pa., man is free on $25,000 personal recognizance bond after being arraigned on an aggravated vehicular homicide charge.
A preliminary hearing for Edward Rinko, 48, Bluff Street, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday.
Rinko is accused of driving the car that hit and killed a Hubbard woman Friday night.
Sue Combine, 25, was killed when she and Jeffrey Culp, 26, of Greenville, Pa., were walking across U.S. Route 62 at Broadway Avenue in Brookfield around 8:30 p.m. Culp was discharged Monday from Shenango Valley UPMC hospital in Farrell.
According to reports, Rinko's car struck both pedestrians, and two other vehicles may have struck Combine after the initial impact. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating.
Lighting ceremony
LORDSTOWN -- The community Christmas lighting ceremony is 6 p.m. Friday in Founder's Park next to the fire station on Salt Springs Road.
The local historical society is host for the event, which will include music, group singing, refreshments and a visit from Santa.
The Schoolhouse Museum will be open at 5 p.m. and after the lighting ceremony. It is decorated with old toys and household items. Artwork from a coloring contest will be on display and winners will be announced.

Manager applications
NEWTON FALLS -- Council is seeking applications for city manager even though voters may do away with the position next month.
Candidates should send their r & eacute;sum & eacute; to city officials by Dec. 31. The position will pay between $40,000 and $60,000.
Residents will vote Dec. 10 on several changes in the city charter, including elimination of the manager's post.
Council voted Nov. 6 to suspend city manager Robert C. Eberhart for 30 days, requesting his resignation by Dec. 6 or he will be fired. Eberhart is suing the city for breach of contract.
