Tuition to increase
SALEM -- The city school board agreed Monday to increase the tuition at the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing from $5,000 annually to $5,500 to cover increased costs.
The nursing school's insurance and salary expenses have risen. The school also suffered a decrease in funding from the state.
Hannah E. Mullins is open to adults, but it operates under the auspices of the city school district. The nursing school graduates about 40 students per year.
Pedestrian death
BROOKFIELD -- A Sharpsville, Pa., man is free on $25,000 personal recognizance bond after being arraigned on an aggravated vehicular homicide charge.
A preliminary hearing for Edward Rinko, 48, Bluff Street, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday. Rinko is accused of driving the car that hit and killed a Hubbard woman Friday night.
Sue Combine, 25, was killed when she and Jeffrey Culp, 26, of Greenville, Pa., were walking across U.S. Route 62 at Broadway Avenue in Brookfield around 8:30 p.m. Culp was admitted to UPMC Horizon in Farrell but was discharged Monday.
Police reports say Rinko's car struck both pedestrians, and two other vehicles may have struck Combine after the initial impact. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating.
Killed on the job
MONACA, Pa. (AP) -- A Lawrence County man was killed while cleaning a stone grinding machine at a wallboard plant.
Ryan Chlebowski, 26, of New Castle, was dead when emergency officials arrived at PF Environmental about 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Wayne Tatalovich Jr., Beaver County's deputy coroner, said Chlebowski was cleaning a pug mill, which has twin augers that rotate inside a casing to grind stone. Chlebowski's father, who also works at the plant, discovered the accident, which occurred between 3 and 5 p.m.
"It looks like he either caught a shovel or his hand in the equipment," Tatalovich said. "He couldn't get out."
Officials from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration were expected to investigate.
Theft at country club
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said someone took a metal cash box containing $615 from an office at Grove City Country Club on Country Club Lane in Pine Township. The theft occurred Nov. 10 or 11. There was no sign of forced entry to the building or the locked office, police said.
Discount fares
MERCER, Pa -- Mercer County residents with disabilities will be able to get discount public transportation services next year with the help of a $159,250 state grant.
Pa. State Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, said the Rural Transportation Program for Persons with Disabilities is being expanded from an eight-county pilot program this year to include 18 additional counties, including Mercer, in 2003.
Program participants will get an 85 percent discount on fares, he said, noting that the Pennsylvania Lottery is providing the money for the program.
The grant will go to the Mercer County Community Transit program, which provides those door-to-door services.
Impact of violence
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Women's Shelter/Rape Crisis Center will offer a workshop on the impact of domestic violence on children, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the center, 1218 W. State St.
Topics include the relationship between parents and children and how abuse affects children who witness it.
Softball-complex funds
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Hermitage School Board will pick up half the cost of improvements at the softball complex behind Hickory High School.
The city of Hermitage will pay the other half to help provide expanded recreational activities for young women in the city. The project has a total cost estimated at $52,000. The school board approved a $13,000 payment to the city Monday and will pay the remaining $13,000 of its share later.
