Man sentenced in theft, assault

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Samuel Brown, 24, of Morris Street, was sentenced in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court on two separate matters to a total of 10 to 40 years in a state correctional facility.
Brown was first arrested Oct. 15, 2001, by New Castle police on charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, theft and receiving stolen property. Police said the charges resulted from the Oct. 1, 2001, robbery of a pizza delivery man.
He was again arrested Jan. 18 by a county detective and charged with carjacking, aggravated assault, theft and receiving stolen property. Police alleged he carjacked a vehicle Jan. 5 in Shenango Township and beat up the driver.
Judge Ralph D. Pratt sentenced Brown to a total of 10 to 40 years for robbery of a motor vehicle for the Jan. 18 matter and aggravated assault for the Oct. 15, 2001, charges.
He had pleaded guilty to both charges as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. All other charges were dismissed, District Attorney Matthew Mangino said.
Brown will serve a minimum of 10 years in prison, Mangino added.
