NO SMOKING Great American Smokeout



The Mahoning Valley American Cancer Society, serving residents in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, and other local agencies have scheduled these activities Thursday for the Great American Smokeout.
Kent State University Trumbull Campus, Champion: The American Cancer Society lung machine and information on how to quit using tobacco will be in the Administration Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also, personnel from St. Joseph Health Center will perform pulmonary functions test, which measure lung capacity.
Smokers Anonymous in Mahoning and Trumbull counties: Smokers Anonymous Support Group meets weekly in Mahoning County on Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Charles Church at Westview Drive and U.S. Route 224 in Boardman; and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Warren YWCA, North Park Ave., Warren.
East Liverpool Cancer Task Force: The group will issue certificates to local companies who are permanently smoke free. A survey must be completed by the company and returned before the Great American Smokeout.
Wal-Mart, Calcutta: Free pizza will be provided to employees who go tobacco free during the Smokeout.
East Liverpool City Hospital: A free stop-smoking program is available. Call (330) 386-2670 to register.
Leetonia schools: Pupils in grades four and eight will have a poster contest, with the theme on the dangers of tobacco. The posters will be displayed at local businesses.
Volney Rogers Junior High School, Youngstown: There will be a tribute day for people who died of all types of cancer. People will wear black arm bands, there will be a set time for an observance, and pupils will be asked to write a paper about a person who died of cancer.
This year, about 169,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, and there will be an estimated 154,000 tobacco-related deaths.
