YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State fell to 8-23 overall and 0-14 in the Horizon League after dropping a match to Butler, 20-30, 26-30 and 31-33 Saturday at Beeghly Center.
Junior Colleen Royer paced the Penguins with 16 kills, while junior Annie Buschur and freshman Nickole Kennedy each had eight kills. Butler's Keely Norris recorded a match-high 20 kills.
The Penguins are at the Horizon League Tournament in Green Bay, Wis., Nov. 22.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Missy Wiese won the 100-yard freestyle and Mandie Smail earned victories in both the 1- and 3-meter dives as Youngstown State dropped an 81-30 contest to Duquesne at the Beeghly Natatorium Saturday.
Wiese earned her win with a time of 56.09 seconds, while Smail scored 230.65 to win at 1-meter and 232.75 at 3-meters. Erin Carter was second for the Penguins in the 200 freestyle and Wiese was also second in the 50 freestyle.
Cross country
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Youngstown State senior Will Edwards ended his career with a personal-best 10k time of 32 minutes, 36.6 seconds, to become the third-best runner in school history, as he led YSU to a 17th place finish at the Great Lakes Regional at Purdue University Saturday.
Sophomore Emily Schnitkey led the YSU women's team to a 27th place finish as she took 78th place in the 6k race (23:12.5).
The men finished the season with a 95-84 record, while the women were 71-92.

Canfield tiesin opener
CLEVELAND -- Canfield High opened its ice hockey season with a 4-4 tie against Amherst Steele at Baron Ice Arena Saturday.
Sophomore Michael Vrable scored two goals for the Cardinals, while Josh Gestasoni and Tim Jones had one each. Jeff Kane had an assist.
Canfield outshot Amherst Steele 30-25.
Mooney-Ursulinetie Poland, 4-4
BOARDMAN -- Poland tied Mooney-Ursuline, 4-4, in a Northeast Ohio High School Hockey League game at the Ice Zone Saturday.
Bobby Wyand had two goals while Rob Synat and Jim Pasquine added one apiece for Poland.
Phil Colucci had two goals while Luke Johnston and Eric Smith had a goal apiece for Mooney-Ursuline. Johnston also had two assists while Smith had one assist.
Mooney-Ursuline goalie Anthony Sabatka stopped 24 of 28 shots. Ursuline-Mooney is 2-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the league.
Cody Hikney stopped 27 of 31 shots for Poland.
The freshman teams battled to a 5-5 tie.

WARREN -- The Mahoning Valley Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame will hold its next meeting at Vernon's Cafe & amp; Banquet Center on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

EAST PALESTINE -- Due to its football team's extended playoff season, East Palestine's JV-varsity basketball game with East Liverpool Christian on Nov. 29 has been rescheduled for Dec. 27.
Phantom Rocketsbeaten by Gems
BOARDMAN -- The Dayton Gems defeated the Phantom Rockets, 4-3, in a Continental Elite Hockey League game at the Ice Zone Saturday.
It was Phantom's fifth loss in a row. The Gems scored two goals in the third period after a 2-2 tie after two periods.
Justin Cassel had the first two goals for Phantom and Steve Wilmert had the third. The Rockets are 4-8.
The Rockets entertain the Detroit Lightning today at 4:30 at the Ice Zone.
Geneva teamsin top 10
CEDARVILLE -- Geneva's men's and women's cross country teams brought home top 10 overall finishes at the NCCAA national championships.
The men's team finished ninth with two runners finishing in the top 40. Matt Manfred was Geneva's top finisher in 26th place (27 minutes, 1 second) and Jeremiah Kuasnik finished 39th (27:37).
The Golden Tornadoes' women finished sixth with two runners finishing in the top 20. Heidi Rickard finished 13th overall (19:25) and Becky Carter, who will compete at the NAIA national meet next weekend, finished 16th overall (19:31).
Division IIIcross country
ADA -- Mount Union College's men's team advanced to the Division III nationals by finishing second overall (69 points) in the Great Lakes Regionals Saturday.
The Raiders' Bryan Less finished fourth overall (25:06). MUC had three other top-20 finishers, including Joe Eby (11th/25:26), Ryan Price (13th/25:31) and Ryan Hochstetler (16th/25:38). Chris Paulett (24th/25:45) rounded out the Raiders' top-five scorers.
On the women's side, the Lady Raiders placed fifth (207 points). Kristen Koelling placed 10th overall (22:42), followed by Elena Hoellein (33rd/23:30), Kate Steklachich (38th/23:41), Dara Ford (40th/23:42) and Lori Zelenak 86th/24:32).
Hiram's men finished 21st. Freshman Aaron Adams finished 84th (27:17) and junior Joe Moosbrugger was 115th (27:52). Junior Mike Kennedy (28:00), freshman Josh Collins (28:04), sophomore Kyle Smith (28:56), sophomore Jacob Vigveno (29:23), and freshman Dan Wheeler (30:21) also competed.
Hiram's women finished runnerup. Senior Jenny Wilke was 15th (23:06) to earn All-Great Lakes Region honors.
Baldwin-Wallace's women finished second and the men were 15th. The B-W women earned a berth in next weekend's NCAA Division III National Championship Meet at St. Olaf (Minn.) College.
Senior Nicole Drouhard (Fitch) was 11th in 22:54.0.
