Mexico won't host Texas NFL matchup

Mexico won't host an NFL preseason game next year -- many had hoped for a Texas grudge match between the Texans and Cowboys -- but the presidents of the two teams are looking to recruit Mexican players and fans.
The next American Bowl won't be in Mexico before 2004, said Roger Goodell, the NFL's chief operating officer. But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said at a news conference in Mexico City this week, "I hope that in the near future that we could be playing a game here in Mexico City with the Texans."
Both teams stressed the importance of increasing their base of fans in soccer-mad Mexico, and said they wanted Mexican and Mexican-American players.
"I'd love to have a Mexican player," Titans owner Bob McNair said. "We're having tryouts and we're looking for some good kickers."
Goodell said the league has "a long-term commitment" to developing talent in Mexico.
"Hopefully, they would be able to play at a position other than kicker," he said.
"The goal is to have a Mexican player in the NFL in the near future," added Javier Loya, a Mexican-American who is a Texans investor and executive. "To get the support of fans, you have to have people from all the community" on the team.
