Lung screening trial

Lung screening trial
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- UPMC Horizon is looking for volunteers to participate in a national lung screening trial. The study, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, will compare the effectiveness of two methods of diagnosing lung cancer: Chest X-ray and spiral CT scan.
UPMC Horizon is one of three UPMC Health System hospitals selected to participate in the study, and is one of 30 screening centers in the United States.
During the study, participants will have either a chest X-ray or spiral CT scan once a year for three years. Test results will be sent to all participants and their physicians, who will determine if follow-up care is needed.
The hospital is looking for current or former smokers who have smoked heavily for years and are between the ages of 55 and 74. They should be in general good health, have no history of lung cancer and not have been treated for any cancer in the last five years, except for non-melanoma skin cancer. Participants receive free lung cancer screening exams.
Parkinson's treatment
LIBERTY -- The Cleveland Clinic and Youngstown Parkinson's Disease Support Group offers a free information session on Parkinson's disease at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn Metroplex, 1620 Motor Inn Drive. The speaker is Dr. Ali Rezai, a neurosurgeon with the Cleveland Clinic, who has performed deep brain stimulation surgery to control the disabling symptoms of Parkinson's, such as tremors. In the procedure, medical devices similar to cardiac pacemakers are implanted to deliver controlled electrical stimulation to targeted areas on each side of the brain. Continuous stimulation of these areas counters the signals that cause the disabling symptoms of Parkinson's. The effects of implants are adjustable and are also reversible.
