AREA SMALL COLLEGE FOOTBALL Froelich brothers lead Titans against Waynesburg, 33-29



NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Scott Froelich ran for two touchdowns and caught a third, and younger brother, Tom, had a game-saving interception as Westminster beat Waynesburg 33-29 on Saturday.
Westminster (6-4, 4-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference) trailed 16-0 early and 29-21 entering the final quarter before Scott Froelich scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 12 yards to give Westminster a 33-29 lead with 3:43 left in the game.
Waynesburg (5-4, 2-3) drove to the Westminster 9-yard line on its next possession before Tom Froelich intercepted a Jeff Dumm pass with under two minutes left. Westminster then ran out the clock.
Scott Froelich finished with 108 yards on 28 carries. His 57-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter cut the Waynesburg lead to 16-7 and was the first of three scoring strikes by Kevin Huber, who finished with 344 yards passing.
Brian Ekis caught 9 balls for 135 yards, including Huber's other two TDs.
Dumm threw for 383 yards and two touchdowns on a 32-for-57 performance, but also had two interceptions. Paul D'Imperio had game high totals of 11 catches and 148 yards, including a touchdown.
Dumm got little help on the ground as Waynesburg was held to 50 yards rushing.

RICHMOND, Ind. -- Darrian Story ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns for Earlham.
Dan Ries added another touchdown for the Quakers (4-6, 4-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) and rushed for 88 yards.
The only score for Hiram (0-10, 0-7) came in the second quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Scott Hoffman. The Terriers used three quarterbacks but managed just 73 yards.
Story made touchdown runs of 69 yards in the second quarter and 9 yards in the third. He broke the school's career rushing record by boosting his total to 2,614 yards since 1999. The previous record was the 2,578 yards rushing that James Barber accumulated from 1990-1993.

URBANA -- Ben Swallow threw two touchdown passes -- including a 66-yarder to Marko Thomas -- as Geneva beat Urbana.
Swallow, who completed 13-of-30 passes for 221 yards with one interception, needed just two plays to take the Golden Tornadoes 67 yards for the go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter.
Zach Blair kicked field goals of 42 and 45 yards and added two point after kicks for Geneva (6-5, 3-3 Mid-States Football Association).
Mike McConnell scored on a 56-yard run for Urbana (1-10, 1-5), with Kipp Nelson scoring on a 15-yard pass from Ryan Swift. Nelson's score put the Blue Knights ahead 14-10 late in the first half.
Kelly Lennox rushed for 133 yards on 28 carries for Geneva.
Urbana drove to the Golden Tornadoes' 15-yard line in the fourth quarter but Joe Spadafora missed a field goal.
Geneva then took over and held the ball the final 10 minutes with a 17-play drive.

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Bubba Smith passed for three scores and Jamie Sye rushed for 165 yards to lead Allegheny.
Smith hit on 11 of 16 passes for 187 yards for the Gators (5-5, 4-3 North Coast Conference). Jon Turner caught five passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns, and Casey Devlin had two catches for 67 yards and a score.
Jeff Hanna completed 23-of-39 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown, and Scott Kovelan caught five passes for 94 yards for the Battling Bishops (5-5, 3-4).
Allegheny took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when Brian Woods ran 27 yards for a touchdown on his only carry of the game. Smith threw TD passes of 24 yards to Turner and 54 yards to Devlin to make it 21-0.
Ohio Wesleyan pulled within 21-14 at halftime on Bernie Vendlinski's 6-yard touchdown run and Hanna's 7-yard scoring pass to Eric Indiciani with three seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Smith threw a 10-yard TD pass to Turner early in the third quarter to give Allegheny a 28-14 lead.
Slippery Rock 21, Clarion 14
CLARION, Pa. -- Slippery Rock scored on its first three possessions and held on despite being held to negative yardage in the second half.
Slippery Rock (7-4, 4-2 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West) overcame converting only one third down and minus 18 yards rushing as the Rockets tied for second place in the division with Shippensburg, a 40-7 winner over California, Pa.
Clarion (7-4, 3-3) held Slippery Rock to 10 first downs and 113 total yards, including minus 3 yards in the second half but couldn't overcome a 21-7 at halftime deficit.
The Golden Eagles drove 56 yards and scored on Adam Almashy's 8-yard run with 2:31 to play, but Slippery Rock ran out the clock for the win.
Slippery Rock took advantage of good field position to score on its first three possessions.
A fumble at the 21-yard line on Clarion's first possession, set up Josh Kniess' 2-yard touchdown run. Two short punts on Clarion's next possessions set up Chad Davore's 32-yard pass to Ryan McKavish and Brandon Markus' 6-yard touchdown run.
Clarion trimmed the lead to 21-7 with an 86-yard drive, capped by Robert Walker's 2-yard touchdown run, to end the half.

CANTON -- Jim Oliver Jr. came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes and Chris Bixler scored twice for Tri-State.
Tri-State started John Bethuram at quarterback but he completed just 2-of-8 passes and had three intercepted.
Oliver came on and completed 11-of-21 for 154 yards with one interception for the Thunder (6-3, 5-1 Mid-States Football Association).
Shawn Marshall provided the only touchdown for Malone (4-6, 1-5) on a 1-yard run in the final seconds of the first half.
Bixler, who rushed for 94 yards on 28 carries, caught a 7-yard pass from Oliver in the second quarter and then scored on a 1-yard run in the third period. Nick Testa closed the scoring with an 8-yard pass from Oliver with 7:15 remaining.
Malone's Eric Rector completed 18-of-35 passes for 245 yards with two interceptions.
The teams combined for seven interceptions, four thrown by Tri-State quarterbacks.
St. Francis 40, Walsh 29
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Mike Ledo rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns including a clinching score with 2:37 remaining as St. Francis locked up an unbeaten season.
Ledo's 5-yard touchdown run gave St. Francis -- holding on to a 34-29 lead -- some breathing room.
St. Francis (10-0, 6-0 MSFA) became the first undefeated team in Kevin Donley's 24-year coaching career. It was the second time that a MSFA team has gone unbeaten in the regular season, following Findlay in 1997.
Luther Stroder added 113 yards rushing on 21 carries and Antoine Taylor completed 22-of-30 passes for 294 yards and three scores. Taylor's scoring passes covered 6 yards to Stroder, and 22 and 23 yards to Cory Jacquay.
Darryl Lyons had an 84-yard kickoff return and Derek Besgrove rushed for 152 yards and two scores for Walsh (8-3, 4-2).
