STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Tanisha Wright scored eight of her 19 points during a key second-half run as Penn State beat Bucknell in the opening round of the preseason WNIT. Molly Creamer had 11 points, including three long 3-pointers, during a 19-9 run that brought Bucknell (0-1) to 55-51 with 14:05 remaining. Creamer went to the bench with her fourth foul with 13:07 to go, however, and Wright scored eight straight points for Penn State (1-0) during a 13-6 run that gave the Lady Lions a 68-57 lead and put the game out of reach. Kelly Mazzante, the nation's scoring leader last year, had 25 points for Penn State, which advances to face Siena, an 83-66 winner over Syracuse.
No. 5 Kansas St. 71, Ball St. 61
MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Kendra Wecker had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Nicole Ohlde had 18 points and 16 rebounds to lead Kansas State past Ball State in the first round of the preseason WNIT. Brie Madden also had a double-double for the Wildcats (1-0) with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Johnna Goff hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 to lead Ball State (0-1). Tamara Bowie had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Kate Endress scored 15.
No. 19 Colorado St. 76, S. Francisco 58
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Ashley Augspurger scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half as Colorado State beat San Francisco in the opening round of the preseason WNIT. Joy Jenkins added 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and had a steal and a basket in an 11-0 run that put Colorado State ahead 42-29 with 16:08 remaining. Carey Sauer led San Francisco with 17 points.
No. 24 Mississippi St. 87, S. Alabama 61
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- LaToya Thomas scored 26 points and Tan White had 23 as Mississippi State defeated South Alabama in the first round of the preseason WNIT. In Sunday's second round, the Lady Bulldogs (1-0) will play host to Tulsa, which beat Southwest Missouri State 81-80. South Alabama (0-1) was led by Shawntay Smith's 16 points and seven rebounds.
