KSU-TRUMBULL Thurgood Marshall tribute to feature retired Judge Jones



Judge Nathaniel R. Jones, a retired federal appeals judge and a Youngstown native, will be the keynote speaker.
CHAMPION -- The Independent Black/Minority Coalition at Kent State University-Trumbull Campus will present a tribute to Thurgood Marshall from Monday through Thursday at the university.
Judge Nathaniel R. Jones, retired from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, a Youngstown native, is the keynote speaker.
Thurgood Marshall was the first black U.S. Supreme Court justice.
From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dr. Kenneth Bindas, an associate professor of history at Kent, will make a presentation in Lecture Hall A of the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education. The case ended segregation in public schools.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday films and speeches by the late Justice Marshall will be presented in the commons area at the university.
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, films and speeches by Justice Marshall also will be presented in the commons area.
Judge Jones will speak beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday in Lecture Hall A.
A soul food luncheon by Hundredfold Fine Foods of Akron will be served from 1 to 3 p.m. in Room 117 of the technology building. Tickets for the speech and luncheon are $10 for adults and $3 for children in advance.

About Judge Jones
Judge Jones has been inducted into the National Bar Association Hall of Fame and has received the 2002 Thurgood Marshall Award from the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association.
He's involved in the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and is the co-chairman of the board of directors of a project under way to build a National Underground Freedom Center in Cincinnati. He also received the Human Relations Award this year from the American Jewish Committee.
The judge has received honorary degrees from Roger Williams University School of Law and Northeastern University School of Law.
