Judge holds parrot's owner liable for woman's injuries

YOUNGSTOWN -- A judge has ruled that the owner of a parrot is liable for injuries a Youngstown woman suffered when the bird landed on her shoulder.
The bird, a green conure named Kiko, was owned by Douglas B. Taylor of New Middletown. It was loose outside his home one day in June 2000 when it flew down and landed on the shoulder of Lenore Nagle of Pine Tree Lane, who had stopped at a business across the street from Taylor's home to get directions.
The woman fell and hit her head on the ground as she flailed at the bird, according to court documents. Mrs. Nagle and her husband, James, sued Taylor and his insurance company.
Judge Robert Lisotto of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court ruled that Taylor was negligent in failing to control the bird so is liable for Mrs. Nagle's injuries.
The matter now will proceed to trial, where a jury will determine monetary damages.
