Helpful new book offers ideas that can save time and money.
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
There's a sewing book that's light-hearted enough for bedtime reading, one page a night.
Aptly titled "Sewing with Nancy's Favorite Hints" (Krause, $19.95), it's a collection of valuable tips sent in by viewers of Nancy Zieman's television series. The book commemorates the 20th anniversary of that show.
Each week, the program ends with a 5-minute segment of hints. Now they are compiled and organized into various topics.
Whether you're an accomplished sewer or a beginner, you'll enjoy reading the practical ideas that can help save time and money.
For instance, in the chapter about pockets, there are simple ideas for making successful pockets with flaps, side (in-seam) pockets and double-welt pockets.
To make a nice edge on jacket pockets with round corners, a Florida viewer suggests making a cardboard template. Just cut a piece of cardboard 5/8 inch smaller than the pocket pattern piece. Then cut the fabric out, place the template on the wrong side of fabric and press seam allowance over the edges of the cardboard. It's an easy trick
Also included in the book are favorite techniques from the expert, called Notes from Nancy, and Guest Spots, which are ideas from guests over the years. This is Zieman's 16th book. She is also a respected pattern designer, lecturer and president of a successful mail-order catalog called Nancy's Notions.
The book of favorite hints is well-organized, amply illustrated, and indexed for quick reference. It's a great gift idea, too, and is available at local stores or by calling (800) 258-0929 anytime.
