BROWNS Jackson, Davis air differences on runner's standing

Running back James Jackson vehemently responded to his coach's claims.
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
BEREA -- James Jackson and Butch Davis have a disagreement.
The Browns' leading rusher from last season does not have a carry this season, and Davis said part of the reason is Jackson did not stay in Cleveland for the full off-season workouts.
"Without putting words in James' mouth, I don't know if his pride or his feelings were hurt or if he viewed us drafting William Green as a show of a lack of confidence in him," Davis said as the Browns prepared for Sunday's game in Cincinnati. "He didn't have the same sense of urgency. Subsequently, when he came back he was a little less than he was a year ago."
The other side
Jackson disagreed. Vehemently.
"I was ready," Jackson said. "No doubt in my mind I was ready."
Jackson spent part of his off-season at the training camps run in Boca Raton, Fla., by former Vikings receiver Cris Carter, now with the Dolphins.
"Coach Davis has an established family, wife, all that blah blah blah," Jackson said. "I'm home with my family. I'm working out. I wake up at 6:30 in the morning, drive an hour and 30 minutes to go work out. Spend $750 a week to go work out.
"I don't question his decision-making or anything else, [but] I don't know why he had to tell the papers all that stuff there."
Jackson also was not pleased he heard the message from the media and not the coach.
"I've been here three months since the season started," he said. "I don't understand why I had to hear that from the media. So I don't know what's up with Coach Davis.
"Coach Davis made a decision who he's going to play. I'm fine with that. I've been fine with that. But I don't understand why today I had to hear from the media why I'm not playing or why what I did in the off-season was such a bad thing."
Jackson said part of the reason he stayed in Florida was to be present for the birth of his child.
"It was my first," Jackson said. "Coaches are with their families. Let me enjoy mine."
Davis said he understood, and he added Jackson was not in his doghouse. He said he just thinks a player is better off working with teammates to develop chemistry and camaraderie.
Jackson will not ask Davis for an explanation.
"I got nothing to ask him," Jackson said. "Play me, don't play me, cut me, release me. It's simple. But I'm not about to get into a media battle with him or anybody else. That's just how I feel."
Rudd: I'm satisfied
Linebacker Dwayne Rudd said he's satisfied with the way he's playing and attributed his drop in numbers from a year ago to the fact he's not on the field as much.
Rudd said there have been no lingering effects from the helmet toss that led to the opening game loss to Kansas City.
"The Kansas City game is behind everybody," Rudd said. "There are guys who are going to be All-Pros, but right now they're throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Being a linebacker, I'm not used to dealing with something that happened in the past. The mishap I had in Week 1 is not going to follow me my whole life."
