The following statistics were collected by The Rich Center for the Study and Treatment of Autism.
Autism is the third most common developmental disability.It is a neurological disorder that affects brain function and interferes with normal development, including communication and personal interactions.Autism often occurs with other syndromes, specific diseases and developmental disabilities.It is 10 times more prevalent than cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy combined; it is more common than multiple sclerosis, Down's syndrome and childhood cancer. It affects 500,000 people (Autism Society of America) and two per 1,000 children (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).The incidence of autism in Ohio increased 9,000 percent from 1992-1993 to 2000-2001, according to a Gallup poll.Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls.
